Rebel Without a Cause put the t-shirt on the map after James Dean wore it.

The Man From Uncle made the polo neck with a sports jacket ultra hip thanks to David McCallum.

Conversley, Clark Gable appearing in It Happened One Night without a singlet made sales for that item drop dramatically. Apparently Paul Mecurio brought them back into fashion after Strictly Ballroom.

Everyone in the late 70's wore braces on their pants after Robin Williams wore them in Mork and Mindy and in the 80's after Gordon Gecco wore red ones in Wall Street. (Good decade for braces manufacturers). There was also a lot of slick backed hair thanks to Wall Street as well.

Chunky cardigans were everywhere after Starsky and Hutch (and very warm they were, too).

The Farrah Fawcett hairstyle was everywhere after Charlies Angels.

My old man, his brothers and mates were very sartorially inspired by American gangster films and George Raft in particular. It was the early pre rock'n'roll 50's and their suits were tailor made "on the book" by Jewish tailors (considered superior).

I have heard it said but never confirmed that the Teddy Boy drape jaclket was inspired by the long Gunfighter coats in westerns ( a la Gunfight At The OK Corrall).

When I was an 'erbert there was a very brief but violent, actually deadly "Clockwork Orange" fad/macabre tribute and I believe this is what made Stanley Kubrick withdraw the film from the UK.

British withdrawal (of A Clockwork Orange)
In the United Kingdom, the sexual violence in the film was considered extreme. Furthermore, it was claimed that the film had inspired copycat behavior. In March 1972, a prosecutor at a trial of a 14-year-old boy accused of the manslaughter of one of his classmates referred to A Clockwork Orange, telling the judge that the case had a macabre relevance to the film.

The attacker, a boy aged 16 from Bletchley, pleaded guilty after telling police that his friends had told him of the film "and the beating up of an old boy like this one"; defence counsel told the trial "the link between this crime and sensational literature, particularly A Clockwork Orange, is established beyond reasonable doubt". The press also blamed the influence of the film for a rape in which the attackers sang "Singin' in the Rain". Kubrick subsequently requested that Warner Brothers withdraw the film from UK distribution.

At the time, it was widely believed that the copycat attacks were what led Kubrick to withdraw the film from distribution in the United Kingdom. However, in a television documentary made after Kubrick's death, his widow Christiane confirmed rumours that Kubrick had withdrawn A Clockwork Orange on police advice after threats were made against Kubrick and his family (the source of the threats was not discussed). That Warner Bros. acceded to Kubrick's request to withdraw the film is an indication of the remarkable relationship Kubrick had with the studio, particularly the executive Terry Semel.

Mission Impossible - Tom Cruise's leather blazer. Saw the film on a pirate copy in a Crete bar and thought the jacket so cool I bought a second-hand one on the Island. When the film came out in the UK it became a must-have wardrobe item and I stopped wearing mine once the rarity value wore off and people started teaming theirs up with flannels, collar and ties.

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

In my youth Adam Faith's series "Budgie" started a short-lived craze for satin jackets.

I remember having a bright red one and an ice blue one ! ( now that's an admission I wouldn't make to too many people )

Not a film but an ad: Nick Kamen stripping down to his undies in the Levi's launderette ad.

Every male thought they could look like him if they bought a pair of boxers

There are still women walking around with Jennifer Aniston hair. (Mind you, I work with a woman who's still got her Farrah hair! Maybe it's back).

Joan Collins gave us shoulder pads with a vengance in the 80s. And by God, I wish they'd come back.

Also in the 80s, Gary Numan was responsible for a lot of young men dyeing their hair black (or white blonde) dressing all in black with blue and red ties. Pretty cool, actually.

Alain Delon's rather nice shoes in La Plein Soleil.

Don't miss out on a chance to win a rare film in Bat-Quiz 13 closing date - 31/8/8.

In 1971 I had my girlfriend remodel a pair of leather trousers to look like the Gaucho pants Jagger wore in GIMMEE SHELTER.

The same trews ended up lining a home made guitar case in '74 - well after the Stones had recorded their last good album
