Default Deep Voiced Moronic Cinema Trailer Voiceovers

Does anybody know or understand why they use ridiculous sounding deep voices for voiceover trailers when advertising films? It used to be exclusively for horror movies, but now it seems that all the other dross coming out of Hollywood has to have that ugly, unnatural voiceover.

Also has anyone any idea when this nonsense started?

there was a piece on one of those magazine type Tv shows which featured the guy who did most of them..he was " the king of voiceovers" alas I can't remember his name.
They always make me think of the spoof trailer " everything explodes"

An awful lot of them are apparently done by George DelHoyo (he was very good in Dead Letter Office, the film I've noticed him in)

The deep voice is no doubt seen as an effective way of wooing the public into believing that they're all about to be privvy to a seminal film.
It is a cleverly executed piece of advertising which obviously works well.
I always skip the trailers on the rare occasions when we do hire a DVD, as they can last anything up to 15 minutes or so, before the main feature kicks in.

As far as i am concerned most trailers nowdays actually put me off seeing a film.I reckon that if the trailer represents the best they can offer then it is not worthwhile.Much prefer the old style trailers with loads of words flashing at you"Cast of Thousands""Years in the Making".

Mrs.Harley n'me never go by trailers, we rely on 'word of mouth'. Never read film reviews after finding out we have very different tastes to most reviewers........

We watched 'Atonement' for the first time last night. Went into it knowing only that it dealt with Dunkirk. Watched it. I felt it was very dark and brooding but well put together.

Deep voice or Jane Horrocks, wouldn't influenece me one way or the other!

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

Many years ago everyone was clambering after Orson Wells to narrate for them. When he priced himself out and became difficult to work with they latched onto Bill Mitchell. I've used him many times and he's excellent. Although usually unseen and rather mysterious he featured in a film called 'The Bitch'. I'm not sure but I think he's no longer with us.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

According to IMDB, Bill died in 1997.

It's an American-only feature surely - just another symptom of how stale Hollywood has become believing that their formulaic ways of making and marketing films still works.

Those deep-toned voiceovers have become something of a icon in our household to the point where we tend to announce even domestic trivia in the same portentious manner ( maybe we should just get out more! ). I associate them mainly with fantasy/adventure movies of the Conan/Mad Max variety and especially remember a Ben Elton routine where he did a spot on take-off which began with him intoning 'It was a time of conflict...it was a time of heroes...' :-)

Only a fool looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart....

Are there any particular deep voiced trailers that you think are particularly moronic? Or do you think they're all moronic?

They became a self-parody almost as soon as they started

I think samkidd probably made a wrong choice of word. I think he meant 'monotone'. Apologies for jumping in but I don't think trailers are moronic. No doubt I stand to be corrected.

No I did mean 'moronic' because if someone spoke to you in that way in real life you'd immediately think they were a moron.
