I would like to see the James Bond series remade sticking to the original stories. I think they would make ideal period dramas for TV in the style of Brett's Sherlock Holmes, Gambon's Maigret or even Foyle's War. The recent radio adaptation of Dr No was excellent, perhaps Eon could strike a deal for a one-off TV version of one of the novels that wasn't represented fully by it's cinema counterpart .... Moonraker maybe.

Rather than the usual option of remaking a classic I wish they'd choose a flawed film that could be better filmed or an initially-ignored film that would benefit from the exposure.

My 18th birthday, starring me

And knowing what I know now, what would I do differently?
Absolutely nothing. I'd just enjoy it all over again

I would like to see a remake of Nicholas and Alexandra, one of my favorite films.

Now that Russia is open for film making, it would be wonderful to have the palaces and the Neva panaroma of St. Petersburg as the setting for most of the production - although the original production was certainly very impressive.

The original stars were supposed to be Vanessa Redgrave and Rex Harrison - opportunity lost!

Hereafter, in a better world than this,
I shall desire more love and knowledge of you

I'd like a decent version of The Picture of Dorian Gray made.

And for God's sake let a woman or a gay man do the casting! There have been previous Dorian's who look like werewolves (Shane Briant), street toughs (David Gallagher) and escapees from ghastly American TV (Josh Duhamel). All hideously unsuitable and in turgid productions to boot. I'm not one to be hung up on looks, but the point of Dorian is he's beautiful. It's like casting someone wheezy and overweight for a Dirty Harry film - just not what's required for the role.

And no contemporary versions either - ugh.

I'd love to see a remake of Lucky Jim.

And some MGM-style musicals for the 21st century, please

Oliver Parker is preparing to direct a new version sometime soon.

The Dogs of War. The book was blinding, the film was pants.

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

There was one with Stephen Tompkinson for TV. I didn't like it.

Thanks for the link, Windthrop: I didn't see this one. The cast sounds pretty good, although Helen McRory as Margaret Peel seems a curious choice (too attractive and not gawky enough). I think Frances De La Tour would have made a good Margaret, although of course she's too old for the role now. David Mitchell (of Mitchell and Webb) might make a good Jim.

Anyway, I may see if it's available on DVD as it's one of my favourite books (alongside Diary of a Nobody, of course, but that's unfilmable!).

Can you remember why you didn't like it?

633 Squadron.

Apart from the brilliant music theme, the original is pants.
