Default A - Z error: Leslie Phillips in, not as, Peter Pan

When the RSC cast a male Peter c1980 there was a lot of publicity about the fact that it had never been done before (at least, not in a professional production).

I would have thought that the one thing you really don't want in a Peter is a boy whose voice is just breaking.
Thanks, CaptainWaggett, for those details.

The Wikipedia entry for Leslie Phillips omits his role in Peter Pan, but indicates a unique distinction:

"He's the only actor still alive who appeared at Pinewood Studios during the week it opened in 1936."

As far as I remember without looking it up, wasn't Peter Pan originally written for the stage by Barrie, and later made into a novel? As Peter was played by a girl the first time around, I'd say Barrie thought it okay. Certainly not more eccentric than having all female parts played by men, as is the Bard's times. ;)

"I swore then that they would never be rid of me!"

Yes indeed - the play came first in 1904 and the novel in 1911. I think audiences were quite used to that sort of thing - Little Lord Fauntleroy was always played on stage by a woman (and in silents) as, quite often, were parts like the Princes in the Tower in Richard III. You still still get this quite often - the most recent RSC Love's Labour's Lost had a woman had a woman as Moth and the young boy is played by a woman in the NT's current Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (as were all the boys in Coram Boy). I guess it's cheaper than organising chaperones and coping with stage parents and having to to cast several children for the same role.

Default Nicole Kidman and Noah Taylor in 'Flirting' (1991)

British actor Noah Taylor (born 1969) received well-deserved praise for his performance as 15-year-old Danny Embling in THE YEAR MY VOICE BROKE (Australia, 1987).

But in FLIRTING (1991), the second movie in a planned trilogy, Danny is sent to a boarding-school where all the pupils appear to be in their 20s.

'Nicola', a senior pupil at a nearby girls' school, is played by Nicole Kidman (born 1967).

It is ironic that FEAR NO EVIL (1980, US) was promoted as a "teen horror movie". All the actors purporting to be "high school students" are (and look) 19-25.

Default Die Brucke aka The Bridge (2008, Ger. TV) dir. Wolfgang Panzer

The remake is being compared unfavourably with the great 1959 movie (dir. Bernhard Wicki) released this month on DVD.

IMDb user comment:
"......the boys were/looked too old: they were supposed to be 16 and not a single one looked that age. Of course, that's the same thing with 25-year-olds playing high school teens in American films...."

Default Michael Cera in 'Youth in Revolt' (2009)

Michael Cera (b. 07/06/88, Ontario, Canada) plays 14-year-old Nick Twisp in YOUTH IN REVOLT (2009).

He also appears in ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (due for release 2011) presumably his autobiography.

Noah Taylor is an Australian actor - born in London and came to Australia aged about 4 or 5.
