Although not a Brit, but my favourite of the old Hollywood stars,James Stewart did active service in the USAAF,based here in Britain. There were always rumours that Clark Gable was based in Middleton St George airbase (later Goosepool airport, later Teeside International Airport, now Durham and Tees Valley Airport - don't ask) and there had been sightings of him visiting pubs in Stockton and Yarm. It was alleged he had stayed in the Devonport Hotel in Middleton One Row.

Not British I know but it seems churlish not to mention the most decorated American soldier of WW2.

And Dennis Price... maybe not "Up to his neck in muck and bullets" like Arthur Haynes but certainly doing his bit.
Wasn't it Ernest Thesiger who replied, when asked what it was like to have been in the trenches, "My dear, the noise ...those dreadful people."?

For the other side you can include Hardy Kruger. Escaped from POW camps on and off screen.

Audie's Welcome
No doubt a great hero and a compliment to his country and their allies - his acting however .

You can add those who served in the trenches of the First War...future brit stars of Hollywood Basil Rathbone (Military Medal or Military Cross - I forget) Herbert Marshall (lost a leg - but still huge in Hollywood between the wars) and, almost unbelievably, Charles Laughton...

And don't forget Basi Rathbone's co-star, NIgel Bruce, wounded at Cambrai.

An actor who always impressed me.

Hugh Griffith, served in India and Burma.
