Default Ross searches for 'worst film ever'

Film 2003 host Jonathan Ross is asking viewers to come up with their worst film ever, ahead of the release of the Jennifer Lopez/Ben Affleck bomb Gigli.
The public's worst films will be revealed after votes are counted in the next few weeks.

"Nothing can prepare you for quite how bad Gigli is," Ross said.

"Now the viewers of Film 2003 have a chance to name and shame the worst film they've ever seen at the cinema," he said.

Ross said Gigli - which stars Lopez and Affleck as a hired thugs - had joined his all-time list of worst films.

Battlefield Earth

"This is one long list. I'd rather have chewed my own arm off than sit through something as putrid as Pearl Harbor.

"If I ever see Richard Gere in Primal Fear or First Knight again it'll be much too soon, and the same goes for the ludicrous Battlefield Earth."

Other films the Film 2003 host hated were Maybe Baby, Very Bad Things and Bullseye!

Ross will launch the poll in Tuesday's edition of Film 2003 on BBC One. Viewers will be able to vote through the show's website.

For me Peter's Friends, if memory serves one of them dies, I was disappointed that we didn't see the end of the lot of them.

In international terms it would have to that Demi Moore, Robert Redford, Woody Harrelson "A million pounds if you let me sleep with your wife" thing.
I can't even bear to find out the title.

Obviously many films would qualify, epecially many thousands of budget efforts but for me it has to be "Raising Arizona" - simply awful. The only film I've ever left the cinema part way through watching. It has to be said that many that would probably qualify I have avoided like the plague. "Blair Witch Project", therefore, would be a front-runner.

Worst? Let's try these on for size:

I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND (1978) - New York teens attempt to sneak backstage at a Beatles Concert in the middle 1960's. Makes one wish for an alien invasion or hurricane. Or both.

DOGMA (1999) - Kevin Smith's mean-spirited smear of any moral position, which masquerades as a comedy about a biblical loophole. Note that in attacking a particular moral position, Smith neglects to offer any near-palatable alternative.

THEY LIVE (1988) - A construction worker finds special glasses that helps him see subliminal advertising messages and aliens among us. Really.

I'd include THE PATRIOT and U-571 for slights against the UK, but as a result of critical mention of those matters I protested by not seeing those films.

\"Winners got scars too.\" - Johnny Cash

With Christmas comming turkey comes to mind. If you like turkeys try "TANK MALLING" 1988 or "EMPIRE STATE" 1987. Enjoy, not.

Default Titanic sinks in worst film poll

Titanic sinks in worst film poll

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet starred in Titanic
Titanic, the biggest box office hit in history and winner of 11 Oscars, has been voted the worst film ever by viewers of BBC One's Film 2003.
The blockbuster came ahead of other big-budget but little-loved movies AI and Pearl Harbor in the poll.

Titanic, released in 1997 starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has made $1.8bn (£1.1bn) at global box offices - almost twice as much as its nearest rival.

Film 2003 host Jonathan Ross said: "May I commend the nation on its choice."

The show received comments from viewers like: "My father fell asleep after 20 minutes. He was lucky. It was only his snoring that kept me awake."

WORST FILMS EVER

1. Titanic
2. AI: Artificial Intelligence (above)
3. Pearl Harbor
4. Vanilla Sky
5. The Blair Witch Project
6. Batman and Robin
7. The Avengers
8. Battlefield Earth
9. Eyes Wide Shut
10. Highlander 2: The Quickening
Source: Film 2003
Another said: "It sank. There. I've saved you three hours of your life."

But the Academy Awards voters did not agree in 1998, when they awarded it best picture - ahead of films like Good Will Hunting, LA Confidential and The Full Monty.

Among the other Oscars it won were best director for James Cameron, who famously declared from the ceremony stage: "I'm the king of the world."

Only last month, Titanic topped a different poll of greatest film endings.

Film 2003 carried out the survey to mark the release of Gigli, a Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck vehicle viewed by many as a turkey.

But it did not appear in the viewers' top 10 of worst films.

Steven Spielberg's science fiction AI: Artificial Intelligence came second, with one person writing: "Completely artificial but devoid of intelligence."

Pearl Harbor, starring Affleck, was in third place, with Tom Cruise's Vanilla Sky in fourth and cult horror hit The Blair Witch Project fifth.

George Clooney's turn in Batman and Robin earned it sixth place, while TV show remake The Avengers - which starred Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman - was seventh.

John Travolta's universally panned Battlefield Earth was at eight while Tom Cruise made a second appearance at nine for Eyes Wide Shut.

And 1991's Highlander 2: The Quickening was the oldest film on the list in tenth place.

I was watching an old episode of Room 101 the other night with Maureen Lipman (who appeared in Columbus), she nominated Carry On Columbus to be sent to the Orwellian repository...

Until somebody mentioned Peter Greenaway's films which she thought should go instead.

Of the latest films I've seen, I have to say The Incredible Hulk (incredible I had to pay to see it) and Secondhand Lions (a waste of Caine and Duvall's talents).

Wasn't Titanic rated as the worst Turkey in the film 2003 poll? I don't much get to see modern movies except for Sci-Fi like the wonderful X-Men but I did cringe at Inspector Gadget. I hated Hanibal, it was nasty, same to be said of Reservoire Dogs (yawn-fest).

As I hate Tarantino and his over-rated abilities (and ego) I guess I think any of his lousy attempts are a pile of doos.

Love L.L.X

PS No offence I hope to any QT fans out there, only my opinion! :)

Richie's movie debut falls flat

Shane Richie and co-star Joely Richardson at the ill-fated film's premiere
EastEnders star Shane Richie's debut film - in which he invested £500,000 - has flopped at the box office with ticket sales of just £2,272.
Richie, who plays Alfie Moon in the BBC soap, even remortgaged his house to plough money into the project.

It was roasted by the critics, opened in only two cinemas, and was seen by only 300 cinemagoers in its only week of release before closing.

Shoreditch starred Richie as a club owner who falls for a jazz singer.

The film, set in the 1930s, saw Richie's character fall for a beautiful jazz singer played by Joely Richardson.

At the premiere in November, Richie said: "The amount of money I've put into this film is well-documented."

"At the start it was only going to be a low-budget thing, but it escalated and I didn't want to let go."

"I've put my money where my mouth is and I just hope the public want to go and see it," added the actor.

The Times branded Shoreditch a "lamentable vanity project" with acting so woeful it "made you want to chew off your own fist in sheer embarrassment".

The newspaper went on to name it as a contender for the "worst film of the decade".

The soap star was supported by a whole host of his EastEnders colleagues at the premiere, including Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell) and his on-screen brother Spencer Moon, played by Chris Parker.

A spokesman for Shane Richie said Shoreditch had only ever been intended for very limited release.

The star hopes to recoup some of his £500,000 investment when the film is out on DVD at the end of the year.

"Shoreditch was never intended to go on distribution through cinemas - the only reason it had a première and screenings was to showcase it to home rental companies," the spokesman said.

"Shane financed the film as a labour of love. He may never make all his money back but he hopes to recoup at least some of it from the DVD."

I'm not a lover of Eastenders or the acting talents of Shane Richie. I have not seen "SHOREDITCH" so can't cast a judgement upon it. What I can do is have nothing but admiration for someone who has attempted, with their own money, to make a film. And a pox on the house of anybody who rains on his parade thumbs_u

For me, the worst film I have ever seen must be:-

"LAST LIGHT"

A prison drama (if drama is the right word) which starred Kiefer Sutherland.

Whilst watching, I lost the will to live, lucky there were not any sharp knives close to hand else I would not be here today.
