Default Remake of My Fair Lady

Isn't it time we had a remake of the musical....
My Fair Lady ?
I think an actress like ....Bernadette Peters would have been
perfect in the role... esp in her 20s.

The role requires a lot of
singing and a lot of stagecraft.... I think that Bernadette would have
come up with the goods.

Patsy Palmer would have been pretty perfect casting too.
A soap actress in the UK... she would have needed a lot of grooming
to take on the part in the West End... and even more for the big time
in the Hollywood studios, but Im sure she could have done it... back in her 20s....

Now in her mid 30s she's probably a bit past perfection for the role.

It could come down to a tv elimination show... probably hosted by
Andrew Lloyd Webber to ....... "Find the new Eliza Doolittle !"
A Saturday night show over 6 weeks ... whittling down the 20 hopefuls
to find a new "Cockney Eliza"..........who would go on to play a starring role in the new West End production
and then.......................
Hollywood beckons !

Yes, I read something about that, with Daniel Day-Lewis as Prof. Higgins, although I don't know if that is still the case.

Thumbs down Down, down, down....

A remake of My Fair Lady !!!!
Who needs a remake ??....just take off the original one, and with the money, pay publicity to incite the public to go and watch this masterpiece !!
One more time, this proves that (in majority)actual directors, screenwriters, producers have nothing NEW to say, their only acting way is to pick up in cinematographic patrimony

Why have a remake when the original was loverly? And much as I like Bernadette Peters isn't she far too old?

I thought the film was long and somewhat over-rated. (I know I am in the minority in that opinion).

But I saw a New York production in the 70s with Ian Richardson - a terrific show - one of the very best evenings I have experienced in a theatre. By the middle of the first act the audience was in a state of elation.

I understood then why the original production was such an extraordinary success. I think something is lost in the translation to film.

I agree. The recent London revival was great but I find the film stagey and unimaginitive and far, far too long when seen at the cinema (though it's great to have the original Broadway Higgins and Dolittle). A new film with a few cuts and a bit of actual direction could be very good. And nobody would actually be actually forced to go and see it.

The musical as some great tunes but it is very difficult to imagine any actress who could manage the transition and the tunes. Supposedly even Julie Andrews struggled with the squashed cabbage leaf side of things.

I also don't like the ending I know Shaw agreed to the change for the film of Pygmalion but it weakens both that film and the musical IMHO.

I was surprised at how good Martine McCutcheon was but stage acting is very different from film. And I belive you're meant to turn up on set sometimes three days in succession

It's interesting that the musical is really based on the Leslie Howard Pygmalion rather than the play (which doesn't have any of the teaching to talk posh scenes or the ball)

It shows as in production on IMDB

Big mistake in my opinion, it's not a story that will appeal to today's movie-goers, unless there are some major changes

I hope they don't re-make it. Although I like My Fair Lady, the non-musical version from 1938 is a much better film. Wendy Hiller was the perfect Eliza Doolittle because she was not beautiful and at the right age, like Julie Andrews had been, unlike Audrey Hepburn, who was a little over the hill. And Leslie Howard was a marvelous unappreciated actor. Unfortunately the movie he's best remebered for, Gone With the Wind, is not his finest hour.

Lovegod acknowledged that - said BP would have been good, in her 20s. Must say, I agree. Bernadette was gorgeous and would have made a great Eliza, as long as she'd been able to master both accents.

Yes, like Eliza at Ascot screaming at the horse: "Move your f***in' arse, you f***in' draught-horse!"

Yes, I thought the ending was weak, but also extremely sexist. Eliza should have replied, "Fetch your bloody slippers yourself, you arrogant sod!" - which would be stronger language, of course, in the remake - and turned around and walked out on him again. I reckon that would have been an excellent ending.
She should have fallen for Freddy - at least he could sing!
