The Telegraph is having a good weekend: Plenty free with yesterday's edition and Depardieu's Cyrano de Bergerac today!

I just watched Plenty, based on the play by David Hare. I haven't seen it since its first run and it sort of vanished, made little impact, didn't it? While it often comes across as a lecture by Hare on British politics, social culture and foreign policy, it also works erratically as a drama, I thought, with a trademark stunning performance from Meryl Streep as the former spy in France dismayed and made virtually insane by the lack of commitment and idealism that seeps into Britain after 1945. It is a film of immense ambition, made on a suitably epic scale by sceptical Aussie Fred Schepsisi, with brilliant supporting performances from Charles Dance and John Gielgud as the Foreign Office bigwig who resigns over Suez - not because he disagreed with it but because he was kept out of the loop. I'm delighted to have rediscovered this - a sort of lost demi-masterpiece that so embodies our limitless appetite for self-analysis and self-loathing. It also seemed singularly apt in our present Afghan and Iraqi adventures.

Default Plenty.

Yep! I brought the ToryGraph just for the DVD. Anything to do with SoE and I'm there!

Meryl Streep looked stunning in it and a great perfomance from her and CD! Interesting to see Hugh Laurie in an early role and whatever happened to Andy de la Tour?

You had to concentrate, Mrs Harley complained you had to concentrate too much! I think the ending was one of those 'Multiple Choice' ones........ or did I miss something like I usually do?

I'm sure I must have missed this first time out? 1985. Just married - just mortgaged and no dosh, that's probably why!

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

Was Clare grogan in the sequel? If so, it wasn't totally worthless.

Well it won an Oscar for the costumes, a BAFTA as Best Film from any Source and the Palm d'or at Cannes. It also won various other prizes and had many other nominations.

And yes, despite all of that, it is a good film

It is a n excellent film ... a real one off which captures the spirit of it's era perfectly, and of course it introduced the word 'paparazzi' into international language.

Akberg and Aimee both look stunning which doesn't spoil the fun either.

I wish I had claws.
