It has been argued that there have only been two really great UK Prime Ministers since 1945: Clement Attlee and Margaret Thatcher, as both brought about profound changes in UK society, for better or worse.......the rest are merely 'time-servers' ..... Would you agree ?

Yes - no doubt as to who, in my opinion, did the greatest good though.

I think there have been only two truly great and good governments in the last hundred odd years - the Liberal administration of 1906 and the 1945 Labour government.

I honestly did believe, or was it simply naive hope, that TB would be a force for good. I was wrong - though the alternative would have been even worse.

I think there are many (students of the Open University, gays, women with unwanted pregnancies, people who might have found themselves on death row etc) who might disagree that Harold Wilson's first two terms made no difference to society. Though for many of us, he's just that bloke with the pipe who made a really terrible chat show host.

I agree with you their Fell, I know People who even now regard Maggie in terms and words that I dare not show on a Family forum, but the alternatives being Michael Foot and then Neil Kinnock at the time, many People had a problem with them.

I've read recently that the Labour Party Election Manifesto of 1983 was a 'Suicide note', and having read it (it's on the Web) I can see why!

Daily Mail: Free 16 DVD set of British WW2 films

How does the quality of the DAILY MAIL A Matter Of Life And Death
compare with the UK commercial release ? The latter should have a better 'bit rate', as the MAIL DVD has
2 films on one side of a DVD....

The DAILY MAIL free DVD series:

Today: A Matter Of Life And Death AND
The Heroes of Telemark

Sunday: Return from the River Kwai

Monday: Reach For The Sky

Then......(the order is not given in advance - the DAILY MAIL want you to go out to WH Smith or Tescos every day to find out....)
OR ......You can send for the lot for £6.99 (+ 8 coupons from different days newspapers)

In Which We Serve
Above Us The Waves
The Battle Of The River Plate (Powell and Pressburger)
Ill Met By Moonlight (Powell and Pressburger)
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Powell and Pressburger)
The Long and the short and the Tall
Escape to Athena
I was Monty's Double
Went the Day Well
All Quiet on the Western Front (1978)
Tunes of Glory (not a war film....but excellent movie)
Aces High
In Which We Serve

The Guardian is giving away a Godzilla poster on Friday and dvd on Saturday 19th April. It's not entirely clear which one it is but from the picture on the front page of yesterday's paper, I'm assuming it's this one. Not British, but maybe of interest to some people.

The poster was in last Sunday's Observer here in the East, and it is for the excellent 1954 original. Even if you don't like monster films, get a copy of this film 'cos it is 'king brilliant!

As it has Roger Moore as a German I think it qualifies as a (very) guilty pleasure!
