The Telegraph giveaways are a promotion in association with the BFI. Today's (SNSM) comes in a double sleeve that can also store A Taste of Honey when you get it tomorrow. Great films, by the way, though I would have thought they'd be more the Guardian's taste than the Telegraph's.

My feelings, too. Shame as I won't touch the Torygraph.

I never buy any 'papers unless they've got a free DVD I want, and even then the 'paper is never read it's just added to the pile for fire lighting duties!

Now lets not have any closed minds about the Telegraph!! Or any other paper like Morning Star (is that still going?)

Maybe we should all be made to read papers which we THINK we won't agree with or like, before we open them that is! In my case that would be the Grauniad... Perceptions aren't always reality....

End of lecture!

PS the Mail DVD's over the next week or so are "pick up" ones, probably from WH Smith if past experience is anything to go by. The Saturday and Sunday Mail have them in though.

I should declare an interest on the Telegraph front. I've been freelancing for them for 17 years. Beyond the editorials and letters page, it's often a surprisingly liberal paper. Even so, giving away two slices of 60s social realism is quite a leap, and may have caused some of the more traditional Home Counties readers to choke on their cornflakes this morning.

(Oh, and btw, I have no personal incentive to plug the T'graph or any of the other papers I work for. These giveaway DVDs eat into the papers' budgets, which means fewer commissions for freelancers.)

Interesting, nyasa, thanks. As others will have guessed, I do read the Telegraph, and have for about 30 years. I think people have an image of a Telegraph reader like Colonel Mustard of Tunbridge Wells. In reality, however, the paper comfortably expresses a very wide range of views, as do many others (except the Sun and Mirror etc ) Oops, thats my predjudices showing

The main criticism I have of the Telegraph is the London-centric bias it has - its not alone in that, I know, but it does sometimes run to extremes. The new editor seems to be making his mark. One other rant: I wish they hadn't ditched the "Connected" column (Rick Maybury)

What kind of freelancing do you do for them? Features?

Torygraph reader here not for the political bias which is of no interest to me as I have no interest in party politics, but the general news and sporting coverage is better than most. Anyway no copy of Saturday Night Sunday Morning with my copy, despite it all being sealed up but I won’t be losing any sleep over it as this type of film is not my cup of tea anyway. Tomorrow’s offering is not very interesting either, far better Woody Allen’s Take The Money & Run with today’s Times

I agree,Harbottle - some of those "kitchen sink" dramas we brought our in the sixties were not my cup of tea either.

I think you'll find that most people believe that the paper which most closely reflects their own view is amazingly liberal and reflects a range of accepted attitudes.

I'm a Guardian reader in the main, but I do read other papers (usually the Telegraph and the Independent) to try to see things from another viewpoint - of the others, I do prefer the Telegraph!

Thanks to those who posted the tip-offs about the Carry On Movies and Donnie Darko - I'll watch out for those.
Au Res.,

I bought it TDT for the free movie and I'll do the same today, I'm nothing more than a cheap son of a bitch that likes to save a few £'s. Oh they're both superb British films aswell.

The tight Yorkshire man stereotype is alive and kicking I can tell thee.

Further to my posting above, the other gimmick to make you impulse purchase the newspaper is to have the large front page banner headline FREE DVD. Only to find a cut out voucher to take to a Woolworth, Blockbuster, or W H Smith store to collect. Then on arrival at the store to be informed "Sorry dear! They have all gone!"

Yer typical and recently they serialised it with the BBC comedy programs and murder dramas, however I still feel that fro the cost of a paper its still a good buy provided you choose the paper for the film, unless you buy the paper as a habit. Personnaly I dont buy papers as a general rule so having a good read at the weekend and a freebee is fine by me as it builds my collection.

It is cruel to discover one's mediocrity only when it is too late.
