a vexed question indeed. this argument about piracy has been going on for 35+ years now to my personal knowledge, ever since the arrival of the compact cassette. it's an interesting one, leading to the coining of new concepts and phrases like 'intellectual property' and the like. i doubt wether an amicable solution will ever be found, as i think it is six of one and half a dozen of the other, with some frills and dressing just to muddy up the water. f'rinstance if piracy is such a big deal, why do electronics companies manufacture and sell the equipment that makes it possible, and so easy? why don't organizations like riah go after them with their hot-shot lawyers? the biggest issue i guess, is pricing. the uk is not known as 'treasure island' for nowt, as prices here have always been higher than elsewhere. i have purchased music cd's in germany and the usa for a fraction of the uk price. [for the same titles] i have always been convinced that if prices were dropped, and set at a more realistic level, people would buy more, after all, the store-bought item is always better than the rip... i didn't hear too many record companies screaming when the cost of your favourite band's latest album doubled in price in the mid 80's because it was on cd rather than vinyl... but as soon as the cd ripper came along, oh how those piggies squealed!!! [ revenge is sweet, but not fattening! ] as for me, i am basically priced out of the market. i begrudge paying so much for a cd/dvd in order to contribute to some wallentless tanker's 1000 quid a week coke habit!!!! so i stopped buying. sad innit? |

And its always been flawed. The record companies (and now film companies) have always assumed that a copied album/film equates to a lost sale without taking into account that if the customer had no option would he actually buy their product? Down the years I've been given loads of C90's (and now dvds) that after one play are immediately despatched to the dustbin. I'm also half of the mind that piracy is today a kop-out for Hollywood, they can claim that poor ticket sales are down to film downloading when the simple truth may be that the film isn't any good. |
