Sort of Oh Mr Porter without the laughs

I'm a regular Independent reader, and still have about 10 DVD's from previous issues I've yet to watch

Cool

The Dialy Express and the Sunday Express are issuing at the weekend His Girl Friday and Penny Serenade. Not clued about the latter, but the former is one of the greatest screwball comedies of all time, and probably the fastest, with gags coming out a dozen a minute. Both starring Cary Grant.

It is now a regular Saturday and Sunday chore to check all the newspapers to see what DVD they are giving away this week.

I picked up Let Him Have It from The Guardian yesterday, with Christopher Ecclestone as the unfortunate Derek Bentley. I've not seen it before and I rate CE as one of our best actors so I will get round to watching it sometime this winter.

There was a Morse DVD in the Daily Maul but luckily I didn't have to buy that 'paper because it was one of my least favourite episodes "Dead On Time". The DM are giving away one a day next week, or maybe over a two week period, and they're all TV detective series' episodes like Frost, Rosemary and Thyme (yech!), Hettie Wainthropp Investigates (aaaarrrgh no, please!) et al, but you have to take the trouble to either cut a voucher out of the 'paper and go into W H Smiths to pick them up, or send the vouchers off with £4.95 to receive them through the post (or wait a few days before they're all repeated on the telly anyway)!

The effort involved is much too great, and to find the voucher you have to read through each page and I don't want to spoil my day having to do that! Why don't they just shove them in the 'paper instead, then you can whisk the DVD out and use the pages to line the budgie's cage or place under the incontinent cat's litter tray without even seeing a headline?

The Sunday Sport is giving away an adult sex DVD with 4 hours of smut to keep people amused! I don't know if it will be in a plastic bag inside the paper or in a brown paper wrapper from under the counter! I'll find out when I go along to the newsagent!

Great film. Great performance from Ecclestone, also from Paul Reynolds as Chris Craig.
The events portrayed were one of the reasons why we no longer have the death penalty in this country.

The execution scene is a particularly powerful one and it never fails to send a shiver down my spine

The Daily Mail is pretty cheap isn't it? While most other newspapers give away classic films all we get from them are TV episodes. Your free Inspector Morse DVD hardly inspires you to rush out and buy it does it?
