Smile Free World At War DVD's

The Daily Mail is giving out a free DVD of the Thames TV epic,A World At War tomorrow and then - I think - it will be publishing coupons to collect to get another 13 discs. The series - narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier, has oft been claimed as one of - if not the - greatest documentaries of all time.

Although the Daily Mail don't say so directly, they imply that they are giving away the complete series of THE WORLD AT AT WAR, whereas in fact they are giving 14 episodes from a total series of 26 episodes. Slightly more than half.
Nevertheless it is well worth collecting.

It is one of the greatest documentaries ever. From those chilling opening words of the narration...
Down this road on a summer day in 1944, the soldiers came. Nobody lives here now. They stayed only a few hours. When they had gone, the community, which had lived for a thousand years, was dead. This is Oradour-sur-Glane, in France. The day the soldiers came, the people were gathered together. The men were taken to garages and barns, the women and children were led down this road, and they were driven into this church. Here, they heard the firing as their men were shot. Then they were killed too. A few weeks later, many of those who had done the killing were themselves dead, in battle. They never rebuilt Oradour. Its ruins are a memorial. Its martyrdom stands for thousands upon thousands of other martyrdoms in Poland, in Russia, in Burma, China, in a World at War...

But it'll almost certainly be repeated again soon on UK History or a similar channel. Then you won't have to suffer the embarrassment of possibly being seen buying the Daily Mail

my trouble with most of these freebies is that I live 30 miles from the nearest collection point so if I want the discs, I have to pay the postage which in this case is about seven quid not sure I will bother

Thanks for that,Steve. I am glad I have got the full series anyway. Those opening lines, which were also used in the last episode - and the last scene was so moving - still have an impact even today.

Those free dvds are good for me since most of the ones they distribute are old blockbusters like cabaret; being a fan of old tv, it is a blessing...

but the free dvds are not the latest marketing craze; i am afraid there are also the free i-tune songs with your drink, the free newspapers (lite, londonpaper...)

everything seems to go free these days if you take time to look for them....

but one thing i do not understand is that; Do those companies offering freebies really think we poor consumers are addicted to free stuff? do they think we are that stupid or blind?????? Are they not consumers themselves?

my corner of paradise ....

I think its only been released to the UK in Pan n Scan 4:3. You have to go Region 1 to have it on DVD in glorious Widescreen.

How I hate DVDs in those horrid little card jackets... I prefer proper cases.

Hate um too you would think they would just print a full size jacket and put the DVD in a plastic sleave so you could put it in your own box if you wanted
