Default Invictus overkill?

Can't help thinking this movie is going to be a dissapointment, it seems Clint Eastwood can't fart in Hollywood without people throwing Oscars, Golden Globes etc at him, his last few movies in particular the double US/Japan war movies were average imho, also the rave reviews about Grand Torino were well wide of the mark as I thought the film was very poorly acted,

Thoughts?

I loved Gran Torino - charmingly badly acted, I thought - and Eastwood is one of the Hollywood legends that can do no wrong in my opinion. Any Oscar or any award thrown at him is deserved ... maybe not for the film in question, but definitely deserved.

Seconded. I thought Gran Torino was a fine piece of celluloid and I enjoyed seeing Clint in an unfamiliar role, I can't think of many movies Clint has had a hand in that have disappoinred me and his 'golden years' are proving to be just as good as ever. Million Dollar Baby was a superb drama and I'm looking forward to Invictus as I'm also a fan of morfan Freeman.

Clint is a genius IMHO and any film of his is worth a look, even the lesser ones. Morgan Freeman I can do without. He took the easy pay cheque route years ago (no problem with that, get it while you can, say I) but his performances have been really dull recently.

Possibly ... but like Eastwood, he himself is always worth watching isn't he?

He is currently working in Holborn filming at the Dickens Museum as shown last night on London Tonight.

Genius?...hmm, wouldn't go that far I'm afraid, I like Clint and has a few films that are favourites but honestly think the plaudits that are bestowed to him are rather wide of the mark, just opinions of course, you like who you like I suppose, as for Morgan Freeman?, a wonderful actor and in my male top 10

The only decent performance I have seen from him in the last ten years has been for Clint in Million Dollar Baby .... in everything else he was just sleep walking through the roles IMHO. I saw a clip of Invictus on TV today and he did look as if he was up for this one. The film itself looks good too. Nice to see Clint (soon to be 80) in sparkling form during the accompanying interview.

I get the feeling I'm going to be preached at, but will reserve final judgment.

Clint has been making excellent films for nearly 50 years and has stayed at the top in Hollywood and around the world for all that time. That marks him out as a genius IMHO. Morgan Freeman is a wondeful actor, but even wonderful actors can turn in dull performances. Marlon Brando is my favourite actor and did some right old rubbish over the years .... it didn't stop him being a wonderful actor, although he was never exactly dull.

It took me years to get round to watching Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima because I thought they would be depressing, but I thought they were both excellent, but the latter even more so. I was very pleasantly surprised by Changeling too.

I won't go near this movie, and one of the reasons is that I think Nelson Mandela was pretty good at being Nelson Mandela plc, and pretty good at showing up for pop concerts but pretty lousy at running South Africa where levels of poverty and violence are no better than they were under apartheid. His failure to make any kind of stand against Mugabe is pretty pathetic, too. He's been a huge disappointment, in my view, and this sort of Hollywood canonisation of him doesn't interest me in the slightest. And isn't it about rugby?

Nelson Mandela was only President of South Africa for 5 years. There are limits to how much even he can do. Mandela has often criticised Mugabe
