I used to be a regular cinema goer but what with increased admission, bad films, noisy kids ect... I can honestly say that I havn't been to a cinema now in nearly two year's.
I used to regularly rent DVD's overnight but that changed after getting the movie channel's on pay tv.
I don't mind waiting that little bit longer to see the "new releases".Many of them are not worth watching anyway.
So I'm curious.This website is full of wonderful film loving people. Yet how many of you out there actually visit your local cinema? How often do you hire DVD's? Or do you prefer watching your own library of classic film standards?
Please share.

Dave.

Not me. I think the last film I went to see was "Waking Ned" because my daughter wanted to see it. That said - it was excellent.

The last blockbuster I would have wanted to see was LoTR - mainly for the book. Now having it on dvd, I wouldn't have been disappointed.

I prefer to watch my own library, supplemented by the occasional cracker on a movie channel.

I don't either.

1. I detest multiplex cinemas;
2. I can't stick adverts and trailers;
3. The prices are too high;
4. I don't like anyone else being in the cinema at the same time as me. They cough, talk, eat sweeties, you have to wade through popcorn, your feet stick to the carpet, people arrive late and climb over you, but worse of, much worse than any of the above, I absolutely hate it when selfish f****** behind me decide to kick the back of my seat by putting their knees up. In the past I have turned round and given them some verbal, but with the proliferation of hostility and knives it's wiser not to these days.

I lived in Chelsea for 15 years until a couple of years ago and this was ideal for the West End but also for the Chelsea Cinema and the French Institute. Being a nerd I kept a record of all movies seen at a cinema and clocked up on average over a hundred a year. Most were in deserted cinemas to avoid other human contact although the 100+ a year figure was heavily distorted by the London Film Festival and NFT visits.

So, since moving to the 'burbs, I've gone from 100+ a year to virtually zero.

Signed up for a trial with Blockbuster rental (3 DVD's posted at a time) and intend to cancel Sky Movies as I watch it less and less, and my whole package is getting to expensive.

Would cancel the Sports channels too if I could rely on PPLive.

I went down the same road a couple of weeks ago. But when I called Sky to cancel, they offered me 3 months at half price to stay. That worked out cheaper than just subscribing to the sports channels, so being the mug that I am, I agreed. You'll get offered the same sweetener.

I expected that, but are you now tied up for 12 months or can you phone up to cancel in 3 months time? If they offer me a half-price Sky+ box I might reconsider

As far as I'm aware, I have no obligation to carry on after the three months, but I guess I'll find out when I try to cancel again in three month's time! I didn't have to sign anything new when I spoke to them a few weeks ago, but I've had a few wrangles with them in the past, and they always say, just go read your contract - it's all in there! I went last week to see Wallace and Grommit for the first time in ages and quite frankly I was disappointed. There was no sign of the organist at all, and no ice cream lady. There were no ashtrays so I had to knock my pipe out on the side of the chair, and I sat for ages at the end of the feature waiting for the National Anthem!

I don't rent many DVDs because the majority on display at our local Choices are the cinematic equivilant of The Sun or The Daily Star! Hollywood hyped up films don't offer any appeal to me, unless Nicole Kidman is in it, and that's all they've got in stock I'm afraid, dozens of copies of each title! Very rarely anymore, mainly because of the cost. My employer used to sponsor the 'art-house' cinema at a local university, so by showing my ID pass I could get in at 'student' rate. Anyway, that was discontinued a few years ago. I think that the last film I saw there was 'Amelie'.

A lot of old films on DVD now cost as little as six or seven quid, either in HMV or on-line with play.com or sendit.com. There are a few recent films I have seen on DVD that I think it would have been worth seeing on the big screen, not many though. I sometimes rent DVDs from the local central library.

Was kinda funny. The call to Sky went to a call-centre abroad but after taking my details and saying I wanted to drop the movies they patched me thru to a UK operator who attempted some soft soap "we've some good movies on the month."

Anyway, I've started building up my Blockbuster list and was chuffed to discover they offer old titles like Man in a Suitcase and you can have them sent in chronological order.

And if Liverpool don't buck up their ideas the Sports channels might be on borrowed time

I haven't been to the cinema in years as there is not much worth seeing. Most of the films I like, I've got on DVD so I stick to watching them or the odd classic on Freeview with all its "choices." However I believe that in the future as broadband speeds rise and rise, you'll select a film of your choice from IMDB and then it will be piped to your High Definition wide screen LCD television. Bill Gates at Microsoft thinks the same way and if it's Microsoft, they usually get their way....

Time to keep your appointment with the Wicker Man...

Cool

I don't go as often as I wish. The last film I went to see was War Of The Worlds and before that Star War:Revenge Of The Sith,the latter mainly because I had seen all previous five at the cinema. I do tend to go in the afternoon when it is cheaper and when there are no school holidays. I still enjoy the essence of the cinema,but whilst cinemas are doing well,the price of admission is of some concern. When a film comes out on DVD,I have the comfort of pausing it when I go to:
Make a sandwich,
Get A Beer,
Get A Beer,
Get A Beer,
Get A Beer,
Go to the lav.
Get A Beer...and so on .

What I dislike about Pay TV services are their continual promotions to get new subscribers. "Subscribe now and get free installation and half price channels for three months" kind of thing.
Well what about those poor long term Pay subscribers who have been paying for the service for year's?
No such promotions, loyalty discounts or special offer's for those poor sap's!!
Seem's Pay's attitude is - we've already got you, we don't have to offer you anything now!!

Just to mention that my trip to the Odeon last week for two of us cost £16.70 (including online booking fee) and i still had to queue at the box office to get my tickets. I made the mistake of buying a bag of fruit pastilles as well which were £2.40, that's £1.41 dearer than anywhere else. Fortunately we took our own soft drinks in.

The film was good but everything else, from the state of the carpets, toilets and the sheer cold clinical nothingness of the building and the experience was a let down. As a child and teenager, cinema was always magical, now it's just cynical!

]Unfortunately our postmen are crap. There are four roads in the neighbourhood including ours which start with the letter "S". Consequently we get everyone's mail for the same house number for every other "S" road, apart from our own, with hilarious consequences! So a postal DVD service, nah! I don't think I'll bother somehow! The pain barrier for stress would be too great!
