Yes a went to see this and really enjoyed it. I think even if your not familiar with his music its worth seeing this just as a film alone, great cinema.

Thanks for the tip - I'll go and see it. I'm a big fan of Reese anyway so any excuse'll do! Particularly loved her in Election

Could you enjoy it even if you don't like country music? And is it true that Joaquin Phoenix does all of his own singing?

JC once appeared as the murderer in an episode of Columbo. I don't know if he did any other acting, though. Great singer, however, and I say that as somebody who doesn't particularly like country music.

I think you can enjoy it if you dont like country music and just watch it as a love story if you like, for the most part the film is about his life from a child and the early part of his career

A girl I work with was playing what I thought was Johnny Cash on the CD player behind the bar. I said I didn't you were into Johnny Cash and she replied she's into anything if it involves Joaquin Phoenix. She then explained it wasn't Johnny Cash,it was Joaquin Phoenix doing the singing. I was surpised at first, but once my ears got attuned to it,now that I was the wiser,I could tell the difference. Good voice, though, nonetheless. However, according to most reports, its Reese Witherspoon who steals the film. Any thoughts, thirdlady?

Have at last seen this movie. Beining a country music fanatic i entered the viewing with a little trepidation but came out the other end fulfilled. A biopic of the early years of Johnny cash ( Jaoquin Pheonix) it lived up to its billing letting the audience know that he mixed with some of the great rock & roll artists of the fifties,Jerry Lee Lewis,Carl Peekins, Roy Orbison all of which had country music in their souls. JQ gave a superb performance as JC capturing his mannerisms on stage, the way he held his guitar and his stiff neck stance were perfect. A brilliant backup comes from Reese Witherspoon playing June Carter from the long established Carter Family but Marky i would not like to say she stole the film. Having wathched JC on stage i have to say that JQ captured the man in black perfectly and an awful amount of work must have been put in to gain such a character potrayal. A great film and a must for everyone

Hello, CA,

I very much agree! Everyone in the audience I was at thoroughly enjoyed the film, and I could hear it as they walked out. The Man in Black, Johnny Cash the man and the Legend, is a hard act to capture, but Jaoquin Phoenix did a superb job of it. He admitted in an interview that several times he and Reese almost threw in the towel, the roles were that difficult to get right. It was interesting to hear that he had met and dined with Cash and the Carter family, who loved his performance in Gladiator and invited him over to their compound.

You are right in saying that Phoenix captured the feel of Cash perfectly, the way he held his guitar, his neck, and that pulling back stance of his on stage. And how about that scene in Folsom Prison when he smashes the glass on the floor and then really starts rocking. How can any audience resist? Reese W. is such a fine actress, perfect in the part, but many of her scenes as June Carter, rightly so, were ones in which she was reacting to Cash, rather than being a main focus. She's not meant to steal the show and doesn't. It's his story, and he and his inner demons are the focus. But when the two are together, especially on stage, and letting loose with one of their numbers...well, there is a special magic. You are going to tap your feet and get in the mood. You will come out lovin' that film and, like me, understanding more fully why Johnny Cash has come to be admired as a Country Western Legend.

Best,

Barbara

Walk the line has an underlying education for its viewers as to the close association to 50s rock and roll and country music. Three of the characters in the film all had strong connections with both. Carl Perkins wrote and recorded the well known Elvis song "Blue Sued Shoes" and went on to become a stong member of the CM fraternity. Jerry Lee Lewis will be remembered for his rock songs, "Great Balls of Fire" and the like but few will know that he recorded many country ballads along with religeous and gospel songs. Waylon Jennings, played in the film by his only son with Jessie Colter Shooter Jennings, was in fact base guitarist for the late great Buddy Holly and was booked in to fly with Buddy on that fateful flight but he gave up his seat to the Big Bopper. Waylon went on to be an icon in the 70s and 80s with his outlaw brand of country music but sadly died in February 2002.
Just a little info i thought some of you might be interested in.....

Hi, CA,

Fascinating! Thanks for tracing their connections with 50s rr and cm. Another thing I learned from "Walk the Line" was that Cash travelled on the circuit with Lewis, Elvis, Holly, and Jennings. That amazed me. All those early legends in the making riding in the bus and goofing off together.

Best,

Barbara

Hi Barbara, yes it is amazing that so many stars travelled together. It is fantastic what you can find out when doing a little research. For instance, whilst flying over Ireland on tour Johnny Cash looked down to see 40 shades of green and you can now guess what song he wrote
