Yes, THE WAR GAME makes a point of saying some of those strange and dangerously wrong info was part of the civil-defense booklet. I kept waiting for them to recommend "Roll up two of these booklets, hold them to your eyes like binoculars and stare into the blast".

James, care to do a review of these 6 projects? I'm unfamiliar with them.

I am not certain why I have little joy from watching George Pal's fantasy films. They always included some relatively envelope-pushing special effects, and they were never the worst ones I'd seen. But somehow, I never favored his films although I have them all.

Many of his would be great for remakes with today's FX.

i would like to add another to the list a film i have only ever seen once many years ago called

The World The Flesh and The Devil (1959)

it stars Harry Belafonte as a miner who gets trapped in a cave but digs his way out to find that everybody on Earth has gone until he finds a woman.
the movie has some rather racial overtones in it of the times but well worth a look if you can find a copy i would love to see this again myself.

Thanks. By chance, I've got this one listed among my Must-See's and, naturally, it's no place to be seen, bought or copied.

Haven't seen it for a long while but could Phase IV be considered?

A polish film I recorded a long time ago called Seksmisja...

Brief IMDB summary

Two scientists are chosen as guinea pigs for a time experiment: they are placed in hibernation and should be brought back to life after three years. In the meantime, however, the World War III breaks out and life have been wiped out of the surface of the Earth. When they wake up, it turns out that not only 50 years have passed but also that they are the only living specimens of the male sex in a new, underground society composed exclusively of women.

Chiz,
Barry

I'm sure there were some good Twilight Zone episodes covering this - do they count?

Bar, thanks for all of these. As a collector, toss out any name and, if possible, throw in a personal review. I find IMDB references sometimes, but it's nice to hear someone's personal eval on these, too.

Any non-English films would be great to locate, too. I have a couple of Russian films on this score, and along with QUIET EARTH's assertion that it's up to the USA to destroy all of mankind, it's always interesting to see how other populations' filmmakers view this scenario.

Dr Stangelove was of course a satire on the Cold War,which resulted in us all getting blown to kingdom come. A better film, however, was Sidney Lumet's dark and taut Fail Safe,in which a USAF squadron have (though wrongly) been ordered to nuke Moscow. With a classy cast headed by Henry Fonda,as the US President,it really is a compelling film to watch and it makes you wonder how close we have been to a nuclear fall out.
Of course, the more frightening films are the ones based on fact. Roger Donaldson's Thirteen Days tells of that dark days in recent history when President Kennedy was playing who is going to blink first with Soviet President Kruschev. Thankfully,Kennedy won at the end of the day,but if Kruschev had dug his heels in....

The incident was dealt with more briefly in Central TV's excellent Kennedy with Martin Sheen playing JFK,and it was after watching that,I became a bit more interested in those days when people thought 1962 was going to be the last year in the life of mankind.

No need to worry about previously mentioned titles! The Japanese Virus is a film I'm unfamiliar with, and TIME TRAVELLERS I'll research a bit to see if I can locate.
