Default Pearl and Dean Jingle

Forty years on, new life for Pearl & Dean jingle

By Ciar Byrne, Media Correspondent

Published: 29 June 2006

Say the words Pearl & Dean to any filmgoer and the chances are that they will know the famous "pa-pa, pa-pa, pa-pa" signature tune.
Nearly 40 years after it became the musical ident of the most famous name in British cinema advertising, "Asteroid" was digitally rerecorded yesterday when Pete Moore, who wrote the piece in 1968, joined singers and a 30-piece orchestra at the Abbey Road studios in north London.
While cinemas will continue to use the original, the new recording will be made available to download from iTunes and as a mobile phone ring tone. Pearl & Dean also plans to license it for commercial use.
"Cinemagoers over the years have loved our theme tune, and we're now giving fans the chance to get their hands on it," said Kathryn Jacob at Pearl & Dean. "The massive popularity of our theme tune and brand is all part of cinema tradition and I'm delighted to see it's got as many fans today as it had in yesteryear."

Taken from The Independent, with thanks

I do not know about the "massive popularity" of the theme song.
The first bars were usually a signal that you had to get your choc ice, orange juice, lemon drops, raspberry ripple and have that quick slash (and I don't mean the seats) before the start of the main feature.

Dave.

I used to laugh at the adverts because they'd show stock grainy footage in a rubbish blue film type colour process of say an Indian restaurant, featuring trendy customers enjoying an Indian meal in sophisticated surroundings, with young professional types in trendy 70s fashions sipping at their wine and beaming at the immaculately dressed authentic Indian waiter, then it would quickly cut to a hastily inserted tacky looking printed card displaying details of the nearest restaurant to that particular cinema "Vist Bombay Palace, only 5 minutes walk from this cinema!" No matter where you went in the country the stock footage was always the same and when you got to Bombay Palace or The Taj Mahal it was a dump full of drunken scruffy fascist customers shouting at the staff!

I've got this music on a CD. I brings back so many memories of my childhood cinema-going. :)
