Under the protestful leer of my hubby, I did review a list of new films that I did enjoy, and there were indeed more than I recalled off the top of my head. But my point remains - I can catch 10 older-made films that are 'new to me' and I'll find at least half are wonderfully memorable, while any 10 new films will be lucky to get 1 onto that list.
Do I donate that much respect to black & white imagery? Is that an aid to any needed 'suspension of belief' (as if buying a ticket and sitting in a theatre seat isn't proof enough that I'm watching a film rather than living the story, real-life)?
Or is the oh-so-sage counsel correct - films-on-TV and film-festivals have an obviously inbred quality control measure already, so those offer more likeable films from the outset. Which is understandable. And if I scan a daily TV schedule, there probably isn't "half the offered films" that are good-for-me. Most of them are awful. Of course... most of them are new!
