What?!! You mean you believe ONE film's hype ("In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream!") but you don't believe another film's hype?!! C'mon!!

I don't know how the Star Wars films will be viewed in 3-4 decades. Or 6 or 7. I love SEA HAWKS, CAPTAIN BLOOD, ADV OF ROBIN HOOD, which I think stack up VERY well to the Star Wars 'saga' for scope and action, and character development. And those are - gosh - almost 70 years old now? Every time I see those on big-screens here, there are dozens of sword fights breaking out as the kids are herded back to the family car. Teens and the 20-somethings are always remarking about the fun of those films, and giving favorable comparisons to the Star Wars and Indy Jones films.

And instead of light-sabres, we have shadow sabres, and the huge shadowed fights clearly outdo anything that George Lucas was able to accomplish with millions in special effects.

I realized I'd never seen FULL MONTY either...

Obviously I've caught clips on TV - didn't they learn anything from 2001? Sound does not carry through the vacuum of space! What is all this zap, whizz, whoosh nonsense?

WOW , PIP,next you'll be telling me that lightsabres really don't make that noise either!!!

I May be getting older ,but I refuse to grow up

I don't think we should tell you - it's a law, probably federal. Maybe international - even intergalatic. If ONLY you'd seen the movies - !

I wish we could, but we probably shouldn't. Sorry, mate. Hope you understand.

(I hope this doesn't lead to eternal depression. I fear maybe I'll be creating a psychopathic sound-effects mimic, now, with this Tough Love approach. If only I'd sent him a movie tix long ago... what's a mother to do?!!)

Is that why they only ever sent men up there........ No woman could stand the silence?

On the other hand women are quite good with a vacuum - I have found.

Outland made good use of the silence of Space.

Default The Ones I Haven't Seen

Laurence of Arabia was on at least 3 times last week but it's so long I could never find the time to sit through it, so I've never seen it.

Bridge on the River Kwai - Having close family who served in Burma I find it difficult to watch such films.

Gone With the Wind - Not my cup of tea.

The Sound of Music - Not my cup of tea.

Dances With Wolves - Too overly hyped-up at the time which put me off seeing it.

Mary Poppins - Not my cup of tea.

Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolfe - IMHO overacting at its worst!

On Golden Pond - Never rated Henry Fonda or this type of father/daughter screen duet.

Citizen Kane - Never had the opportunity to see it.

Harry Potters - Never read the books either

Star Wars - Merchandising exercise

Lord of the Rings - Too long and too much padding. Fell asleep when I tried to watch the first one.

I tried sitting through them when they were recently aired on CH4 but after half n hour I just got bored and turned over. The whole obsessive fandom drove me nuts.

Ditto the Matrix trilogy which I've never seen.

Especially when it bears so little relation to what actually happened.

How have you avoided it? It seems to be on quite regularly.

Good. They're intended for children, not adults.

I've got to ask the obvious question "How do you know that Who's afraid of VW is over-acted if you've never seen it?"
I've never seen it either and broadly agree with your choice. I have seen Citizen Kane and was really puzzled why this film with its tricksy camera-shots is always rated so highly.

I don't understand why CITIZEN KANE receives so many Best-Ever-Film votes. I've watched it five or six times with different crowds, on big-screen and TV, and never give it a high rating.

Perhaps the film's value of importance lies in an anti-Hearst sentiment among the audiences, where powermongers that weren't in Hearst's camp were therefore his enemies, and anything that tweaked Hearst's nose was called "great" and "important". Since Hearst seems to have gone as far to promote this "You're either with me or against me" attitude as his enemies, and because he was a perceived thorn in so many powerful paws, maybe this film gives the anti-Hearst camp all the reason to rejoice.

Except... wasn't Welles more often considered another thorn in many of those same paws?!!

And aside from those timely and political undercurrents, I still don't see a great film - except for the labels on the box, or the adoration from the herd.

I sat thru one and a half MATRIX films, opting to leave during the second one so monsters could burn my flesh, use ballpeen hammers on my teeth, perform ritualistic nail-pulling, and gouge out my eyes. When the third MATRIX arrived, I found it amazingly easy to avoid.

It's not that I hated these films. I was so bored during the second one that leaving was too easy. I kept thinking, "They really need a little Alien to spring up out of Surfer Dude's tummy while he's laying prone, all hooked up."

You are probably right Christine. The more I think about it, the more that the ending seems inevitable. I guess I just had this mental image that they'd ride off into the sunset.

Browsing through the Christmas TV schedules it also occurs to me that I've never seen The Great Escape nor the Magnificent Seven!!

Very true Steve but Lawrence stands out as a great film.

As for Sound of Music I had a sister and accompanied her simply to ponder whether Mother Abbess was a rank or a description of her bust.

And lastly if you do not want to see Dances With Wolves try to get to listen to John Barry's composition.

regards

Default Another few I've missed...

DIRTY DANCING because, well, I never cared. Same with GREASE, except I can easily avoid Travolta films, and more easily avoid Travolta films that are musicals, and even MORE easily avoid Travolta musicals with Olivia Newton John in them. "Not a problemo!"

I've tried to watch WAOVW a few times but failed each time. The Self Indulgent Shouting School of Acting attended by Mr Burton has always put me off, and so I've switched off or left the room each time. I'm probably doing him a dis-service, but instead of playing a character he always seemed to play the part of an "ack-torr" playing a character, a bit like Kenneth Branagh! But what do I know?
