Grease. Not sure how I've avoided it as every girl I've been out with has been nuts over it.

Plenty of other movies I've not seen that are supposed must-sees, but can't think of any right now. Will post later!

I'm probably the least superstitious person in the world and yet whilst thinking about this subject over the last couple of days, have pondered those films that not only I haven't seen, but fate has determined that I just wasn't meant to see.

The French Connection 1 & 2 - I tried to watch the first film three times and was interupted by a phone call which diverted me to a serious family crisis on each occasion. Oddly, the same thing happened when I watched FC2!

Capricorn One. I'm reminded only because it's being broadcast on cable as speak. However, I decided not to bother watching seeing as my first two attempts to watch it were failed. Believe it or not, A VCR in the first instance, and a DVD recorder in the second, both died about 30 minutes from the end of the film. Frustrating to sit through a 2 hour recording and have the same thing happen twice!!

Weird, but according to my philosophy of life, just odd coincidences.

Gone with the Wind.
Wizard of Oz

The Sound of Music...until last year.
I don't like musicals, but Cabaret is good...Chicago too.

Is there a 'most overrated movie' thread?

"It's a mad mad mad mad World."

Saving Private Ryan. I have never been able to get past the opening because it is so realistic and horrific.

Kurosawa's superb b/w "Seven Samurai" and his "Yojimbo", with the great Toshiro Mifune rank high on my list of favourite films of all time. And that's saying a lot from this Bogarde fan.

All the best,

Those "I'll buy it for a rainy day" films... ha ha

There's lots of stuff I haven't seen based on seeing something by the filmmaker I didn't like and deciding it wasn't for me. But a good film is a good film, and if you like good films you really shouldn't let preconceptions about the content put you off: I have no real interest in ballet or boxing, but I saw and loved THE RED SHOES and RAGING BULL because of my enthusiasm for the filmmakers. Your interest or lack of interest in a subject is what will STOP you from seeing the films that change your life, whereas your interest in a filmmaker will lead you to those films.
By the way, most of Kurosawa's films were not historical samurai epics (though those films are often brilliant, and your perception of the subject matter is meaningless until you've actually seen them, Eight and a Half stands in the middle of Fellini's work, with the films on either side being quite different, and most of David Lean's films are quite short by modern standards, with maybe three exceptions out of sixteen.
I've tended to avoid Hugh Grant's stuff, myself. Even though i don't think he's a bad actor -- it's just the kind of filsm he does. I saw Four Weddings, but everybody I know is funnier than everybody in that film.

I know what you mean Christine.
I have some film titles that I bought over two years ago that remain sealed and unopened. I initially save them for a special screening on that special day which never quite arrives.
The build up to watching a film is sometimes more exciting than watching the film itself. I've lost count of the number of times I've made the purchase of a title only to be later disappointed by an overrated film or television series.

Dave.

Default 100 Films I Want To Die Before I See

I have never seen STAR WARS or any of the sequels / prequels, 2001 I gave up on after watching 2 apes fight for 20 minutes, I never watch anything with Richard Burton as I don't think his acting style comes over well on film and I don't think I have ever watched anything with Elizabeth Taylor (apart from "Life WIth Father") because by the time I was growing up she seemed to be making all these heavy melodramas like "Suddenly Last Summer", "Reflections In A Golden Eye" which apparently contains the line "she cut off her nipples with a pair of garden shears - do you call that normal?" - which kinda put me off. I also avoid anything with Marlon Brando and only saw "The Godfather" and "On The Waterfront" last year at my son's insistence. I thought GONE WITH THE WIND was terrible and boring - and this from a man who sat through the 6-hour silent GREED at the NFT a couple of years back.
GONE WITH THE WIND put me off cinemagoing....

TRY.. it is worth the effort. War was/is horrific and to portray it any other way (any war film, with a few exceptions up to this point in time usually glamorised conflicts) is to grossly understate the sacrifices made by many.

I wonder about reasons for avoiding or not seeing films.

I don't like Jim Carrey's frenetic comedies, although when he's in skit-comedy (like IN LIVING COLOR), I really enjoy those. For 60 seconds. 120 seconds. That's it.

So I haven't seen any of his comedies.

But I have seen most of the dramas and dram-edies (Truman Show, Moon).

Steve Martin's frenetic comedies don't offend me as much, so I've seen most of his but I only rewatch ALL OF ME for pleasure. His dramas (Leap Of Faith and Spanish Prisoner, for example) are favorites of mine. But others (Bowfinger, Shop Girl) leave me thinking he's spending WAY too much time either by himself or in the company of Yes Men.

Of course, I'm the dumb blonde that believed John and Paul needed each other, too.

GREASE is a film I avoided simply for that "scent of the herd" effect.

I can understand that about Steve Martin. I find him hit or miss but the hits are really good. All of Me is very good. I like Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid too.

I love the fantasy aspect of LA Story.
