I wouldn't waste two hours on one....my point is that they put two bankable stars, spent the budget on costumes, and made up a plot, scenery, almost as an afterthought...and with spare change. And with Beyond The Rocks, it really shows.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Pen, thanks much for the several notes. I'm also delighted to hear that Jack Cardiff is doing well. I know, locally, that his fanbase continues to grow. I think next week, some of his work is going to be front and center at a local film school in front of 3,000 or 4,000 students, seeing a few examples of old school film making.

I would have placed odds that you'd never seen a JLo/Afflick film. I haven't either. I'm sorry to hear that about Beyond the Rocks. Marty's review on Silents was excellent, wasn't it?

Best,

Barbara

Of course The Birth of a Nation has to be there, again there is a print with a Carl Davis score. The other one I can watch over again is King Vidor's Big Parade this certainly could have not been improved upon by the addition of sound!
....The silent film was a unique artform, conveying the story without words and with the minimal use of intertitles. The score, I think, is as important as the film itself. The use of modern electronic scores, in my mind distracts from the film and in some cases makes it virtually unwatchable, at least if you are watching at home you can turn the sound off and put your own music cd on in its place!

Hello, Phil,
Brilliant! I hadn't thought of choosing my own CD as a replacement score.
How very true that the right score is important to a Silent. For me, the right score for Abel Gance's "Napoleon" is, as you say, the Carl Davis score, not the Coppola one. Along those lines, I applaud Turner Classic Movies for generating interest in Silent film among young composers and offering incentives, such as their following annual competition.

All the best,

Barbara

Young Film Composers Competition

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES PRESENTS
THE 8TH ANNUAL YOUNG FILM COMPOSERS COMPETITION

TCM's Young Film Composers Competition is an annual event sponsored by Turner Classic Movies and Film Music Magazine. For those who live to make music, this is a unique opportunity for young composers to bring their musical vision to film.

When the Young Film Composers Competition began in 2000, it was inspired by a desire to bring unseen films to life and by TCM's long-standing commitment to film preservation. TCM has more than 100 silent films that have not been seen since their theatrical debut, as they were originally performed with live musical accompaniment and have no recorded score. Thanks to past competitions, new scores have been written for Camille (1921), starring Alla Nazimova and Rudolph Valentino, two Lon Chaney gems: Ace of Hearts (1921) and Laugh, Clown, Laugh (1928), The Rag Man (1925) with Jackie Coogan, The Temptress (1926) with Greta Garbo, Souls for Sale (1923) with Eleanor Boardman as well as The Show (1927) with John Gilbert and Renée Adorée which are now shown regularly on TCM.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grand prize is $15,000 and the opportunity to score the 1924 silent film Beau Brummel with a premiere of the completed score and film on Turner Classic Movies. Also receives...
* Mac Pro desktop computer - Fully configured with:

(Approx. value of $6,847)
