New to the forum but can't find a link, so thought would post this here.
Is there a section for enquiring about silent films? I have a few in my collection but not sure where to make enquiries for certain silent films I would like. I presume I could request under looking for a film section but wondered if anyone knew of dedicated silent film sites/collectors. |

I love Silents also. The very knowledgeable member "Penfold" can undoubtedly tell you everything and more you'd want to know about Silents. There are also several online sites devoted to Silents which you can find by googling. If you are close to Bristol, do try to attend their Bristol Silents Fest. where you will meet other fans who can help you further. All the best, Barbara Dirk_Bogarde_Brigade - a Yahoo group |

What silent films are you after, specifically? There are a few good websites, mainly based around festivals, and live events. Silent Era : The silent film website is the best general silent site, though US based , to be borne in mind when ordering fom the links; Le Giornate del Cinema Muto - Pordenone Silent Film Festival is the site for the pre-eminent Silent Film Festival, annually in Italy, and very highly recommended; Bristol Silents > Celebrating Silent Film > Membership is the site for our local group, we run a comedy festival in January, events throughout the year; http://www.kino.com/video/results.ph...ent&genre_id=3 is one of the best video labels for silent film generally.
More specific needs or interests, I'll try and point you in the right direction....but you had be better be prepared to order from all over the world....!! |

Milestone Films - Welcome to Milestone Films!
The company who released Hindle Wakes (1927) on DVD. Just post your requests in the wanted (film) section. You might find some people discovering your requests over time so do not be disappointed if no one replies immediately. |

While we are discussing Silent Films, this is as good a thread as any to praise the current Berlin Film Festival's tribute to the image of the "New Woman" in Silent Film.
Barbara ----------------------- http://www.berlinale.de/en/das_festi...tive_2007.html A New Look at the New Woman: City Girls, Images of Women in Silent Film This year's Retrospective at the Berlin Film Festival is dedicated to the female stars of the silent film era and the image of the 'New Woman' made popular by them. Many of these films are over a century old, and yet their suprising freshness and timeliness is just what makes them so enjoyable today. Among the most progressive and arguably most famous films in the programme is Tretja Mestschanskaja (USSR,1926/27) by Abram Room (Friday 8pm, Cinemaxx 8). A public programme of talks and lectures explores the interrelations between the image of the 'New Woman' propagated on screen and the real life changes. Jenny Hammerton, for example, will take a angle on British Pathe's Cinemagazine,, accompanying herself with film clips and songs from the grammophone: "For Ladies only? Eve's Film Review". In addition, the Retrospective , like every year, offers the opportunity to see new prints of many cinematic treasures. For example, two versions of Giovanni Pastrone's Cabiria , the first internationally successful historical epic, have been carefully restored: both the silent version from 1913/14 as well as the long-missing sound version dating 1931 Several films in the upcoming Retrospective are nearly a century old, yet still today they delight and surprise audiences. Far from an anachronism, ?City Girls ? the image of women in the era of silent film? promises the dual pleasure of seeing old films from a new perspective ? half of them in restored version ? thereby rediscovering the qualities of the "New Woman" of the 1910s and 1920s. ?It?s a great pleasure to see how these female characters turned the traditional model on its head with an easygoing freshness and a great deal of boisterousness,? enthuses Rainer Rother about a programme in which both the ?young years? of film as a medium and of the modern metropolis are reflected ? in tales of of disruption and upheaval of a sometimes astonishing timeliness. An interview with the director of the Retrospective. > |

It's a hell of a programme...I wonder how A Cottage on Dartmoor went down...the new restoration of Cabiria is pretty spectacular if you get the chance...the silent version that is; the sound version I couldn't take, the sound quality is dreadful; you could bear it for the sake of a short, but not an epic...
