Funny all the comments are about that overpaid peewit Jonathan Ross, what about the Films? Were any that should have been mentioned not mentioned? Were there amongst the nominated films that should not have won a bafta? Did "The Queen" really deserve it's award? let's see what happens at the Oscars.

Having just seen The Queen, I would really have to see The Last King Of Scotland before I caould comment on the award; the acting and direction is impeccable throughout, particularly by the leads, and the writing is excellent...but seeing it at the cinema nearly gave me a migraine; the over-use of low-def TV footage (real and fake) seen on a big screen became painful to watch.
Hot Fuzz was fun, but the camerawork and editing may induce the vapours amongst some here, but it was well written nonsense...and yes, Wells really is like that :)

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

<Or is it really just Stephen Fry and his humour that you don't like?>

Steve - It is the unecessary overtly homo-sexual nature of Fry's banter which I object to. I would object just as much if another Bafta presenter were to make constant allusions to sex with female stars and to talk about genitalia or other functional body parts in a hetero-sexual way. Fry can be perfectly charming and witty without resorting to that. He was a presenter at a Folk Awards ceremony a year or so ago and was charming and humourous without the slightest sexual reference.
I don't think you can equate the BAFTAS with the other programmes you mention. A much wider audience will watch the BAFTAS for the awards element and to see Dame Judi, Helen Mirren and all the other stars. The choice of presenter isn't necessarily a motivating factor. Although I don't watch Ross's movies programme, I imagine that people tune in as much because it is Ross as for the content.
I am not a prude in any way and I have many gay friends. I just feel that Fry's irreverent and puerile bent has no place in that show.

I asked him to look at the body. That's who he is.

Maybe it's because I like Stephen Fry that I am more forgiving of his lapses in comedy, its a shame really because his intelligence and wit are a constant source of entertainment for me.

Your comments are spot-on, Sam. I can no longer watch anything featuring JR because of the points you mention and his foul mouth. So I currently give the awards show a miss, until they get a decent presenter.

Hello Terry,

I very much agree about Fry's intelligence and wit. I had only known him as a comedian and at times thought he could be a bit silly. But... I was amazed when I heard him give the keynote speech at Great Yarmouth's Tribute to hometown boy Jack Cardiff, who was born there during his vaudeville parents' one-night stand.

Fry was articulate and very knowledgeable about the important role that cinematographers play in the success of a film. He began with cameramen in Silents and worked his way up through Jack's years both in Silents, getting a wonderful break working with Michael Powell, and then to Hollywood. I have to say that Fry was brilliant and fittingly serious about a subject that mattered a great deal to a man who cared about the making of fine films. I was impressed.

All the best,

Barbara

Stephen Fry has come out as bipolar (manic depressive) so it might depend on which phase you catch him in.

Hmm. I did not know that, but it sheds interesting light.

Best,
