Apart from Alistair Sim's Scrooge, I am a big fan of the 1970 Scrooge starring Albert Finney. I will watch both with relish this year. I'm also a sucker for the 1988 Scrooged with Bill Murray.

Ghoulish thought it is, I always view Gremlins as a Christmas movie, too. It's a wonderful homage to It's a Wonderful Life and the whole Capracorn jazz.

And I confess The Snowman makes me cry.

On the Twelfth Day is another with a Christmas theme but it's a short rather than feature.

A Child's Christmas in Wales with Denholm Elliott, which was filmed in Montgomery (or Trefaldwyn).

But, IMHO better than all these...yes, even than Alistair Sim's version, is the Henry Edwards-directed mid-30's version made for the cheap and cheerful Twickenham Studios of Julius Hagen. Starring Sir Seymour Hicks...who had been Scrooge on Music Hall and legitimate stages since the Old Queen passed on....thus being possibly the only time the actor playing Scrooge was too old for the part ...with Donald Calthrop, playing against type, as a bubbly, sparkly little Bob Cratchit - everyone is too old in this version, to compensate for SSH's advanced age, even Tiny Tim is shaving - but the whole is charming, genuinely moving, and works really well as a family film; that it captures and preserves the technique of a crucial player in the move from stage acting to film performance in the early 20th Century, and of popularising Dickens in particular, makes it priceless, and well worth seeking out.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Smile Christmas Films

Can support Nick's post above, The Bishop's Wife (MGM, 1947) with Cary Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young is a great Christmas film and will fill you full of Christmas cheer!

Mark - as always, you've sold me on this film - but is it available commercially anywhere?

Ditto to both of those I defy anyone to watch the musical Scrooge
and not go around humming or whistling the song " Thank You Very Much "
for days afterwards it's a real earworm !!!!
One of those catchy songs
that burrow into your head and you just can't get it out of there.

By the way you can get both of these very cheaply on Amazon.co.uk

Alastair Sim 1951 version for £3.99

.
............... BUGGER.............

Thats done it now just thinking about it has set
the song going off in my head
I'm going to have to go and dig out the Dvd
and hear it right now.

Thank you Very Much.

Ladies and gentlemen
On behalf of all the people who have assembled here
I would merely like to mention if I may
That our unanimous attitude
Is one of lasting gratitude
For what our friend has done for us today
And therefore I would simply like to say

Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me
I may sound Double-Dutch
But my delight is such
I feel as if a losing war's been won for me
And if I had a flag I'd hang my flag out
To add a sort of final victory touch
But since I left my flag at home
I'll simply have to say
Thank you very, very, very much!
Thank you very, very, very much!

Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me
It sounds a bit bizarre
But things the way they are
I feel as if another life's begun for me

And if I had a cannon I would fire it
To add a sort of celebration touch
But since I left my cannon at home
I'll simply have to say

Thank you very, very, very much!
Thank you very, very, very much!

Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me
It isn't everyday
Good fortune comes my way
I never thought the future would be fun for me
And if I had a bugle I would blow it
To add a sort of 'ow's-your-father touch
But since I left my bugle at home
I'll simply have to say
Thank you very, very, very much

No, my friends, it is I who should be thankful to you!
For he's a jolly good fellow
For he's a jolly good fellow

For I'm a jolly good fellow
And so say all of us

Thank you very, very much
Thank you very much
Thank you very, very much
That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me)
Thank you very, very much
The future looks all right
Thank you very much
In fact it looks so bright
Thank you very much
I feel as if they're polishing the sun for me
Thank you very much
Thank you very much
Thank you very, very, very, very much

And if I had a drum I'd have to bang it!
To add a sort of rumty-tumty touch
But since I left my drum at home
I'll simply have to say
Thank you very, very, very much!
Thank you very, very, very much!

Yes, but only reg.1 Amazon.co.uk: Scrooge (1935) (REGION 1) (NTSC): DVD: Seymour Hicks,Donald Calthrop,Robert Cochran,Mary Glynne,Garry Marsh,Oscar Asche,Marie Ney,C.V. France,Athene Seyler,Maurice Evans,Mary Lawson,Barbara Everest,Eve Gray,Morris Harvey,Philip Frost,He ....I haven't even got a copy of it myself, I really should order it.... I saw it at the NFT's Henry Edwards season last year.....but a friend thinks he has it, off-air, on tape...somewhere...!!
H.E. was a top actor and director in the silent era, Scrooge was one of his last directorial assignments, though he acted on in character parts. He plays the avuncular senior surgeon (the one with the X-ray of a nice pre-war head injury) in Green For Danger, for instance.

Cheers!!

Three films I usually manage to watch during The Holidays:
Bill Forsyth's Comfort & Joy
Robert Wise's Curse of the Cat People
and Joel Coen's The Hudsucker Proxy

I've also got a thing for the Art Carney 'Twilight Zone' special.
Crude as it most certainly is, it gets me every time.

Curse of Cat People is beautiful to behold, especially during its snowing scenes. I do not usually watch film at Christmas since I stay with my family and we have Monopoly tournaments everyday.

Default Christmas Films

I know it may not be the jolliest Yuletide film but *The Holly and The Ivy* from the play by Wynyard Brown is moving, and says more about the real meaning of a family celebration than any amount of sentimental tinsel laden stuff..
