... Lynch, Scott (Ridley not Tony of course), Boorman, Powell and Pressburger, oh and occasionally Mann.

Would I be making lots of enemies to suggest who else is worth mentioning?

Nobody is here to make enemies. We're interested in opinions. Preferably well thought out ones. Not just "I like XYZ and if you don't then you stink". The level of discussion is usually a bit higher than that

A collective who have made some of the dullest most unintelligible films I've seen.

A friend warned me just how bad Miami Vice was but sadly I ignored them and had to take it in for myself. All you could hear was the audience whispering "erm, wtf is going on?" Masters of style over substance.

There should be an exchange system where everytime a Gondry graduates from MTV we send them a Ridley Scott (and all prints of GI Jane).:

I was caught out by Miami Vice,I admired Manns early work with the excellent Manhunter and Ali and thought great , another Michael Mann film ,Vice is over stylized pretentious twaddle and Im being kind to it,it would look better as a 3 minute video on ,as DB7 says, MTV

Not seen Ali but Manhunter (a tv film to boot) and Heat were excellent thrillers and Collateral is probably the best thing Tom Cruise has done in a decade; but I honestly thought he was above jumping on the tv spinoff bandwagon.

I have not seen Mann's last three, but Heat is brilliant and Last of Mohicans was one of best films of 1990s. The Insider tried my patience though.

I knew I'd agree with Wolfgang over something eventually....

Manhunter was excellent, too, far better than the Hopkins Hannibal films, and I'd love to see The Keep again....I don't think I could take it all in first time....

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

The Miami Vice debacle was the main reason I attached the caveat to Mann.

Steve
I was pretty sure that's the way it was before I posted. But it seemed like a good way to start a debate and of course they aren't the only names worth a mention - I forgot Carpenter.:

Totally agree penfold. Manhunter remains one of my favourite films. And The Keep is great too.

I am not that keen on any of those Lektor films, but Manhunter is probably best one out of them. I have never seen The Keep, but it has been recommended to me on several forums and they say I will love it. After Mohicans and Heat I would have "Thief" down as his next best film.

The Keep is very different from all the rest.

Man Hunter was a msterpiece the only problem being that it should have kept the title of Red Dragon. Petersen & Cox were superb

Icouldn't agree more. Will Petersen was never better and Cox's understated Lecktor was a thousand times more terrifying than Hopkin's. As for Tom Noonan: fantastically weird and menacing.

The keep is excellent. A lot more in that film than uniforms and guns. Heat, TLOTM was excellent as was Manhunter. I loved Miami Vice as a TV prog, and with all the hype I was really looking forward to the film....Not good on any level. Too long, extremely talky for a supposed action film...oh, and not much action. Yep, pretty much rubbish.

All of Torquemada's other choices would be in there too, but I would add Launder and Gilliat

There's no need to kneel, I'm a very democratic sort of lord.
