The only Russian actor I have heard of is Nikolai Cherkassov, who starred in Alexander Nevsky.

I have not seen a Russian film, but I would live to see Sergei Eisenstein's films.

I have a few early russian&soviet films in my video archive.

the silent ones are suprisingly accessible.

Eisenstien uses very innovative techniques to convey the story line. my favorite is where he needs to show that the new tractor the collective has purchased wont start. He uses a tractor engine that has been sawn in half to expose the internal componants and films them spinning and faltering. brilliant.

Despite being aimed at a mainly illiterate audiance he doesnt underestimate their overall intelligence Some of the satirical jokes are quite subtle, and for a propaganda film subversive.

If "the past is another country" old soveit propaganda movies are like visiting another planet.

I've recently started to translate my actors pages,

so far Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, Aleksandr Abdulov, Yevgeni Leonov.

Tell me what you think. If you like it. I'll do my best to translate the rest.

No mention of Helen Mirren (Ilynea Lydia Mironoff) ? :)

She was recently in St. Petersburg and there's an article with an interview she gave there that mentions her Russian ancestry

I have always found the idea of Russian films to be extremely interesting, probably because of how exotic they seem. The few that I have actually been exposed to have not disappointed.

There is one in particular that perhaps someone might identify for me. My wife and her friends from uni (many are from former soviet countries) often rave about it but no one recalls the title. I have never seen it but I'd really love to.

It's about a man who gets drunk and accidentally goes home to the wrong flat. All of the ugly communist era architecture looks the same, so everyone can identify with his situation. It has many comic situations and may or may not have a romantic sub-plot. Apparently it is very famous for its music!

    Does anyone know it?

The film you mention is 'Irony of Fate'.

It's an annual favourite with Russians at New Year.

I haven't seen very many Russian films, but Tarkovsky's Solaris and Stalker spring immediately to mind.

I also remember enjoying a Russian film - can't recall the title - about an acting troupe (stage or silent film?) in the days just prior to the Revolution.

Have any of you seen "Night watch"? It's a very good Russian Sci-Fi / Fantasy movie ("Lord of the Rings" meets "Prophecy"). It's been out on DVD for some time, but since Fox bought all American distribution rights, they have mandated to stop making NTSC formatted dvds of it. The disk has been slowly disappearing from even Russian stores in America. And Fox kept postponing the release until next week (limited release), while sequel "Day Watch" is already out in Russia. Ain't US movie studios grand

    Hello, Alexey,

I have always been fascinated by Russian literature and film. They incoporate a deep, brooding sense of culture and history almost unlike any other. My specific question: of the Russian film treatments of Napolean, whych version do you recommend?

I have seen the superb version by Abel Gance but only in its shortened format by Coppola.

    All the best,

The only Russian film I have is Bimmer, unfortunatly bought in error, I quite enjoyed it but did not understand one word the actors spoke.

Think the star was supposed to be the 5 series BMW, who knows.

What, no subtitles, or looks say it all?

    You are too witty.

I know what you mean...a BMW abandoned in the snow, a tragedy too harsh to contemplate.

But it probably has surfaced in the West as a brand new car
