Thanks for the details - I saw that NOTW would be offering "Scrooge" this weekend (on a newsgroup) but didn't know which version!

Brilliant! I'll sacrifice my principles and buy that rag just to get the film, which in my worthless opinion is the definitive version of the Scrooge story, and remembering it from childhood Christmas films on TV it was quite scary as well! Alistair Sim was born to play Scrooge!

After what I have said in the past to friends & family about that pnewspaper.-I think I'll have to send the wife to buy it.

I too was thinking about sacrifising my principles to get a cheap copy of this great film. However I have just seen an advert for it on itv and is seems to be the colourised version. If there is an option on the dvd to watch the black and white version then I will get it but otherwise i'm not going to bother.

    Anyone know

The version of "Scrooge" The News Of The World is giving away is the American colourised version.

All us film buffs will have to turn our television colour controls to zero.

However, I think the quality of the print will be very poor.

The colorized [sic] version of SCROOGE was shown about four months ago on, I think, Channel 5. It was atrocious. Turning off the colour only made it worse. However, there is a wonderful new box set of Sim movies just out on DVD from DD. It contains SCROOGE, GREEN FOR DANGER and LONDON BELONGS TO ME. Everyone a winner.

Not only is it colourised, but it also has an introduction by Patrick McNee (presumably made specially for television).

The colourisation does detract (somewhat) from the overall quality of the film, but it's still an enjoyable wach for a Sunday afternoon - and, unlike many of the newspaper freebies, it DOES have scene selection (you just have to sit through an advert for the football suppliment in The Sun)

Yep, it's good fun to lock horns providing no-one takes it too personally!!!

Piracy is a big issue and I don't have the answers. If I should duplicate a DVD-R of a personal recording for a mate who stuffed up his own recording means that I am involved in piracy. I suspect most people have thresholds they won't cross - e.g. won't buy a DVD from a trader in a pub, or won't donwload from a peer-to-peer network, whatever. But ultimately, we are all indulging in double standards! I only stopped illegal downloading when I got a nasty letter from Paramount's bully boy solicitors - that did it for me!

    a vexed question indeed.

this argument about piracy has been going on for 35+ years now to my personal knowledge, ever since the arrival of the compact cassette. it's an interesting one, leading to the coining of new concepts and phrases like 'intellectual property' and the like.

i doubt wether an amicable solution will ever be found, as i think it is six of one and half a dozen of the other, with some frills and dressing just to muddy up the water. f'rinstance if piracy is such a big deal, why do electronics companies manufacture and sell the equipment that makes it possible, and so easy? why don't organizations like riah go after them with their hot-shot lawyers?

the biggest issue i guess, is pricing. the uk is not known as 'treasure island' for nowt, as prices here have always been higher than elsewhere. i have purchased music cd's in germany and the usa for a fraction of the uk price. [for the same titles]

i have always been convinced that if prices were dropped, and set at a more realistic level, people would buy more, after all, the store-bought item is always better than the rip...

i didn't hear too many record companies screaming when the cost of your favourite band's latest album doubled in price in the mid 80's because it was on cd rather than vinyl... but as soon as the cd ripper came along, oh how those piggies squealed!!! [ revenge is sweet, but not fattening! ]

as for me, i am basically priced out of the market. i begrudge paying so much for a cd/dvd in order to contribute to some wallentless tanker's 1000 quid a week coke habit!!!! so i stopped buying. sad innit?

And its always been flawed. The record companies (and now film companies) have always assumed that a copied album/film equates to a lost sale without taking into account that if the customer had no option would he actually buy their product? Down the years I've been given loads of C90's (and now dvds) that after one play are immediately despatched to the dustbin.

I'm also half of the mind that piracy is today a kop-out for Hollywood, they can claim that poor ticket sales are down to film downloading when the simple truth may be that the film isn't any good.

I started this topic on Free DVD's in Newspapers".

Why the previous posters are discussing Piracy is beyond me.

So! back to the subject in hand!

In todays "Daily Mail" 5 December (Southern Edition, London area) the Free DVD is

the heartwarming, amusing and romantic, Ring Of Bright Water is based on the best seller by Gavin Maxwell and stars the husband-and wife acting talents of Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna of Born Free fame.

Posts often wander off topic. As long as they are still relevent to the main subject of the board, British Films, then we don't worry about it too much.

Then what is the point of having "Subjects" and "Titles" in this forum? Those posters who wander off topic could have started a new subject entitled "Piracy"
