I've just acquired the region 1 DVD of Random Harvest - really good, with some interesting extras, like the radio version of the story, with Colman and Garson, sponsored by Lux soap and introduced by Cecil B DeMille! They don't make 'em like that any more..

Also some terrific trailers for Random Harvest; Mrs Miniver and Goodbye Mr Chips. Clearly HYPE is not a new invention; these trailers go way way over the top for what are admittedly three very fine films indeed. You know the sort of thing: "the most stunning event in the history of motion pictures"; "what movies were invented for" etc. Great Fun!

The Lux Radio Theater ran from 1934 to 1955 and was a series of radio adaptations of big movies of the time.

They did "Stairway to Heaven" (A Matter of Life and Death) twice, once with Ray Milland in the title role (27th October 1947) and then again with David Niven (12th April 1955).

"Stairway to Heaven" was also broadcast as part of the Screen Director's Playhouse series on NBC with Robert Cummings in the lead role (26th July 1951).

I've got recordings of some of those and, given the limitations of radio, especially in a live broadcast, they're often pretty good.

But the one I'd really like to find is the episode of "Robert Montgomery Presents" for the Lucky Strike Theater where they did a live TV broadcast of "Stairway to Heaven" starring Richard Green, Jean Gillespie and Bramwell Fletcher.

Chinatown is a bit special. Well actually pretty much anything starring Nicholson (except Mars Attacks) or anything by De Niro up till (and including) Heat.

Hi Harbottle, and welcome to the site. I think you will find Dr Strangelove is a British film,as indeed all of Kubrick's films were since and including Lolita.

My favourite non-Brit films are numerous, but I am very fond of 'DANTON'. Even with the subtitles!!

One can onl y imagine 'The Terror' as it was called, when you could easily lose your head, for no reason at all.

Good morning boys.

I echo MarkyB's words. You must be an afficionado of the trio Hay; Marriott and Moffat. I have mentioned this before that I think the magic worked well with the 3 of them and that WH was never as good on his own. Do you have any thoughts Harbottle?

Thanks for the welcome JIM, and I have to agree with you about the team of Hay, Moffatt and Marriott. They worked so well together that when the terrible twosome were missing from Hay’s pictures they just were not the same. Mind you I have not seen Where’s That Fire in years (for example) so that might enter the list of favs. I have always had a soft spot for Marriott in particular, I find his performance as batty squawking Harbottle quite hilarious, my favourite pictures are predictably enough Oh Mr Porter, Ask A Policeman and Convict 99.

Adventures of Robin Hood ,Goodfellas ,both exceptional rollercoaster rides
Inherit the Wind ,Bob Roberts and Glengarry Glen Ross , any Woody Allen for realizing that americans can make movies well and NOT be a rollercoaster ride with a happy ending
