Inherit the Wind ,Bob Roberts and Glengarry Glen Ross , any Woody Allen for realizing that americans can make movies well and NOT be a rollercoaster ride with a happy ending
Is that the Errol Flynn version of Robin Hood? If so, I heartily agree with you.

Good morning boys.

Hi Harbottle
I don't know if you ever saw the American film Fail Safe, which came out the same time at DS:HILTLTB. If you haven't I'd recommend it. The US President (Henry Fonda) on learning a US Air Force Squadron have been given the wrong orders to nuke Moscow. Whilst trying to bring them back,he has to promise the Russian President that he will nuke New York to prevent an all out war if Moscow gets hit.
Excellent film, remade for live television with Richard Dreyfuss and George Clooney.

I have watched "Fail Safe" this week. The accompanying documentary shows scene comparisons of the two films. The producers of Fail Safe were forced to delay the theatrical release of their film by the people distributing Dr Strangelove, although it was completed first.

Laura is sublime and one of my favourite Noirs. I really admire the cinema of Otto Preminger. The Fox R1 release of Laura is superb and well worth tracking down, as are the recent bfi releases.

Hi Everyone,
What about Harold and Maude, anybody like this one? It gets better with age.

yes I agree about Harold and Maude, have explained the plot to my family and I don't think they believe such a film was ever made, it's on tv today, but on Sky so can't get it. sadly

Hi Joan,
You'll just have to get the Dvd. I did after years of searching, and watch it when I am on my own, that way I can laugh and cry. There is a website dedicated to Harold and Maude, very surprising how popular this is. A girl wrote that SHE was going to commit suicide and changed her mind after seeing the film. Pretty powerful I would say. Vivien Pickles is divine, and Ruth Gordon is very influential,
if and when you see this film again watch the 'cop' scene very carefully (the scene where Maude steals the car) watch his face, I reckon that is brilliant acting! Oh, and Bud well what can I say. Worth having in your collection.
Harold Pleezeee!

My favourite non-British films (ie most of them!) are from across the channel not 'the pond':

Tango - Patrice Leconte
La Ardilla Roja - Julio Medem

plus a lot of others from France and Spain.

Please name some as I'm intrested in picking up a few more modern titles from Spain and France.
