Two spring to mind, both directed by Claude Lelouch. The first is Les Miserables (1995) starring Jean Paul Belmondo. Victor Hugos novel is set in the time of the Second World War and after.
The other is Hasards Ou Coïncidences (1998) Chance or Coincidence.
Set in modern day Europe, some reviews have been poor, but I enjoyed it. To tell you about any part of the film would be to spoil it.
If you do see these tell me your thoughts. Sadly my tapes have been given away otherwise I'd send.

best wishes
Freddy

Please name some as I'm intrested in picking up a few more modern titles from Spain and France.

Patice Leconte is one of France's best-known directors. His films include:

Le Parfum d'Yvonne, starring the lovely Sandra Majani
Le Mari de Coiffeuse (aka The Hairdresser's Husband)
La Veuve de Saint-Pierre, with Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil
Ridicule, with Charles Berling, Judith Godreche, Jean Rochefort

More info on Tango here if I'm allowed to post this link to a 'rival' site:

DVD Times - Tango

You can try Amazon France for any that don't have British editions.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet - best known for Amelie - made a very funny film called Delicatessen many years before.

Another good French director is Bertrand Tavernier, whose films include:

L627 - a cop movie or 'policier' set in Paris
L'appat (aka the Bait)
Laissez Passer.

Not forgetting Claude Berri classic story of Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, which were both recently shown on Channel Four.

On to Spanish stuff, Bigas Luna's bawdy humour - as featured in Eurotrash (it would be) - is evident in:

Jamon Jamon
La Teta et la Luna (the Tit and the Moon)

as well as his first film, less bawdy, but more 'explicit' in places, called Las Edades de Lulu (the Ages of Lulu)

Julio Medem's are listed in Spanish here (I'm afraid my knowledge of the language is somewhat limited) but I think this is a nice site!

FILMOGRAFÍA DE JULIO MEDEM - www.juliomedem.org

La Ardilla Roja translates as the Red Squirrel.

Thanks for that Red Squirrel, I've seen a few of those namely Delicatessen, Amelie, Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources & Las Edades de Lulu. Will put the others on my 'to see' list.

I recently enjoyed Almododor's Talk To Her. But didn't think much of Alejandro Amenábar's Tesis. I will have a scan of those sites later this evening.

Billy.

"Weird Tales" (Germany, Richard Oswald, 1919) Silent
"The Cabinet of Dr Caligari" (Germany, Robert Weine, 1920) Silent
"The Hands of Orlac" (Germany, Robert Weine, 1924)Silent
"The Student of Prague" (Germany, Henrik Galeen, 1926) Silent
"Rasputin - Demon to Women" (Germany, Adolf Trotz, 1932) Talkie!

Yes, they do all star Conrad Veidt - but they are also outstanding films!
Not involving Conny at all:

"Death in Venice" (Italy, Luchino Visconti, 1971)
"Veronika Voss" (Germany, Reiner Werner Fassbinder, 1982)

Hollywood:

"The Big Parade" (King Vidor, 1925) John Gilbert
"The Beloved Rogue" (Alan Crossland, 1927) John Barrymore - ahem, and Conrad Veidt
"Flesh and the Devil" (Clarence Brown, 1927) John Gilbert and Greta Garbo

And absolutely anything by Erich von Stroheim!

"The Wedding March" and "Greed" in particular! The man was a genius - a looney, but still a genius!

I know its a Brit site but were are all allowed one or two films that we like from across the pond.
My personal favourite is It's a Wonderful Life. Any others to add to the list?
There are far too many great films, it's impossible to narrow it down to just a few.

But...

Farinelli is a beautifully made film about the famous castrato opera singer. Lavish sets, excellent acting and artfully made.

Baise-Moi is a landmark of modern French art house cinema. Violent to the core and shocking - sticks two fingers up at the rest of the insipid mainsteam movie industry.

House Of A Thousand Corpses, directed by former rock star Rob Zombie, is the best modern horror film for years.

Downfall - depicting Adolf Hitler's final days in his underground bunker, Bruno Ganz is absolutely splendid in his portrayal of the 20th Century's most notorious monster.

Le Mepris - Starring the beautiful Brigitte Bardot and with some stunning cinematography and groundbreaking directoral execution. One of Jean-Luc Goddard's finest films.

Irreversible. Starring the delectible Italian actress, Monica Bellucci, this was described as one of the most important films of the last 20 years. This one is not everyone's cup of tea but it has to be worth a mention. Great film - some scenes difficult to watch. The rape scene is both shocking and harrowing. Truly awful.

I find most films with Jack Lemmon eminently watchable ; THE APARTMENT : IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU : THE FORTUNE COOKIE : SOME LIKE IT HOT : MISSING ; etc. The man was just a class act !

Taken From Amazon.com
The Road Home (1999)

Cast: Zhang Ziyi, Sun Honglei, Zheng Hao, Zhao Yuelin
Director: Zhang Yimou

A young man returns to his native village after the death of his father, the village's schoolteacher, who died while trying to raise money for a new schoolhouse. His body is in a neighboring town; the young man's mother insists that it be brought back on foot, lest his spirit not find his way home. From this starting point, the young man recounts the tale of his parents' courtship, which involved a red banner, mushroom dumplings, a colorful barrette, and a broken bowl. The Road Home is beautifully filmed, particularly the luminous face of Zhang Ziyi (from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,Memoirs of a Geisha), whose performance is a heartrending portrait of hope and yearning. A simple but deeply emotional film
IMHO a very beautiful and moving film about love at first sight. There is a nice touch, that the present day is filmed in black & white while th past is in vivid colour.this was Zhang Ziyi first film and the camera falls in love with her.I recommend this film to everyone.

Great stuff! I'm really negleting silent cinema at the moment. But I'm planning on picking up Murnau's Sunrise next week.

Maybe your the right person to ask about the quality of this disc?

I also like most of Jack Lemmon's movies except the one that's a remake of It Happened One Night and for my money nothing beats the original. Some Like It Hot is my favorite Jack Lemmon movie and I still laugh at the closing line.

Anything with James Cagney, Laurel & Hardy or James Stewart.

Some months ago a movie cable channel here showed Igrid Bergman's Swedish movies, including Intermezzo, the one that brought her to Hollywood for the remake. They were great. :)

I like the Back To The Future Trilogy and could watch them again and again (and have).

It was a wonderful treat
