I once read that black and white film is actually more expensive than colour; the reason given was that b+w contains silver. Is there any truth in this?

Old b/w nitrate stock was often melted down for this reason - isn't this what happened to most of Cecil Hepworth's stuff?

I'm curious about restoration costs relating to B/W and colour - I'm assuming that a colour restoration costs £££ more because it is more complex. Is this really the case or does it depend on what's being restored, the state of the original source, and other factors?

The state of the original source, and how far back you go, makes a big difference.

When they did the recent restoration on The Red Shoes the UCLA Film Archive wehn all the way back to the original Technicolor negatives. Many "restorations" of colour films only to back to an intermediate stage, not to the original negatives.

The negatives for The Red Shoes were in a sorry state. The three strips of the three strip Technicolor had sometimes shrunk at different rates and so had slipped out of register with each other. They had faded and there were scratches on the negatives and on the optical soundtrack, there was even mould growing on some sections. That's why it took so long to fully restore it and that's why it cost so much.

But the results are stunning, especially when seen on the big screen.

And the techniques they learned in doing The Red Shoes will mean that future full restorations will be a lot faster and a lot cheaper - but they'll still take some time and will still be quite expensive.
