Default Directors who have been fired!

The post about "The Directors Cut" got me thinking about films where directors have been replaced before their fim has bee completed and consequently receive no credit even though some of their work remains, coming immediatly to mind is Carol Reed being replaced by Lewis Milestone on the Brando Trevor Howard version of Mutiny on The Bounty, or Tony Mann being replaced by Kubrick on Spartacus, can anyone think of others, Im sure there are plenty!

The Green Man; credited to Robert Day but mostly shot by Basil Dearden.

Stanley Kubrick replaced by Marlon Brando prior to shooting One Eyed Jacks
Richard Donner replaced by Richard Lester on Superman 2
Richard Stanley replaced by John Frankenheimer on Island of Dr Moreau
William Keighley replaced by Michael Curtiz on Adventures of Robin Hood
Hubert Cornfield replaced by Richard Boone on Night of the Following Day

..... that's four films already in this thread that involve Marlon Brando !!!

Make that five if you include his appearance in Superman 2.

Young Cassidy (1965). John Huston started as the director but fell ill so Jack Cardiff took over.

The Thief of Bagdad (1940) had about ninety twelve directors (well, a large number anyway). Ludwig Berger is credited but doesn't seem to have done much, or not much that finished up in the final version. He must have had a good agent though because he is still credited as a director. Alexander Korda, Zoltan Korda & art director William Cameron Menzies all had a hand in directing various parts of it, but none of them got a credit.

Robert Hamer was fired from SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS for drunken behaviour on the set (the nightime street scenes outside the posh restaurant) , and these early scenes were directed by Cyril Frankel (uncredited).....

Read that Gable didn't get along with Cukor; called him a 'woman's director', cute phrase, never heard of it being used, elsewhere.

There is a more lurid account of why Gable didn't get along with Cukor. Cukor was gay and had knowledge of the fact that early in his career before hitting the big time Gable had succumbed to gay casting couch overtures from a casting director friend of Cukor, and so Gable felt uncomfortable having Cukor around, Gable was of course not Gay but people did all sorts to get ahead in those days, difficult to believe but then so were the stories about Rock, I can't remember where I read that, it may have been Kenneth Anger's " Hollywood Babylon" not an entirely reliable source I know but rather shocking all the same.

I read in Simon Callow's book about Charles Laughton that Gable has similar problems with Laugton during Mutiny On The Bounty.

Wow! I knew about Cukor, of course, but Gable? Wow, again. The studios were really good with covering up. Gable was M-G-M's #1 money maker, they had to keep it quiet. I've, always, been curious about the Jean Harlow / Paul Bern deal and how Louie Mayer seemed to take the investigation away from the police.

That is such a sad story. Jean's short life was tragic in so many ways. Bless her.

I always thought it was John Ford, rather than Huston?

I always thought it was John Ford, a quick check on IMDB confirms that it was.

Jack Cardiff did work with John Huston though as cinematographer on "The African Queen" perhaps that was what you were thinking of.
