Default Centurions this Week

Interesting to note that the BBC saw fit to show a John Wayne double-bill for the old pansy's 100th birthday yesterday while Laurence Olivier's own century earlier in the week seems to have passed unnoticed. Have I missed something?

They showed The Entertainer last week, but I agree they could have organised something better.

He did a good job it's more what he stands for that I don't like.

I suppose it was a good opportunity to show a tribute seeing as the birthday fell on a Saturday. Larry's was on Tuesday.

Maybe the Beeb is saving its pennies for 'Graham Norton's World of Blair' or whatever else they have coming up in the next few weeks.

(quote - Sir, The centenary of Lord Olivier’s birth on May 22 has come and gone with barely a ripple to mark it, other than a few of his films on TV, a radio programme and a small ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
Yet for 40 years his public profile was as internationally famous as Sir Winston Churchill’s and brought honour, admiration and respect to the UK and, unlike that old warrior, did so without incurring bloodshed (except perhaps among theatre critics).
Sir John Betjeman’s centenary was marked with a week-long celebration of his life and work, yet the man widely regarded as the greatest actor of the 20th century, the producer and star of three superb Shakespeare films – one of them a gloriously uplifting piece of wartime propaganda – and the founder of the Royal National Theatre has been largely ignored.
Could it be that the nation thinks more of war leaders and poets than it does of a mere actor? - quote)

This interesting letter was published in yesterday's Times.

A good letter. Could it be that the nation thinks more of Hollywood war heroes than it does of a great British artist?

And not even 'real' war heroes at that !!!!

Bats.

ps

I always found it sad that in the US Wayne (although I love some of his films) was venerated for his celluloid wartime 'heroics' and wound up a millionaire movie legend, while Audie Murphy (a real war hero) was neglected in later life by Hollywood and died in relative obscurity. I love Audie's films so i may be biased.

No, but didn't you get the word "Pansy" transposed somehow, sureley you were refering to Olivier! but seriously, that doesn't seem right that the Beeb should neglect to remember Oliviers 100th while honouring the Duke's. A double bill at the very least or a weeks season of his best films. Come on BBC, WAKE UP!

I thought this thread was about Roman soldiers.
A Centurion is someone in charge of (approx) 100 men or a group of 100 people.
A Centenarian is someone that has lived for 100 years (or would have done if they hadn't died before they reached that milestone)

BBC Radio 4 did a nice "Archive Hour" programme about Olivier last Saturday (19th). See http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/archivehour/pip/obzwk/

Does that make us all centenarians then?
