I think D cairns and Wolfgang have pointed out a very basic point which is arguably the crux of this debate and that is the films "cultural viewpoint" as I said before, American through and through.

Seems odd how you all want to disown Star Wars but probably think Dr. Who epitomises the best of Britishness........

What's so wrong about wanting the goodies to win and the baddies to get their comeuppances in due order?

Oh!.....don't forget Fred Woods was in it as well......

True, The Emperor, Darth Vader and his stormtroopers do seem to embody current US foreign relations policy ideas...

Actually, there was one British person in an influencial role - its initial Editor... Oh wait a second... He was fired from the Production and his work on the movie completely scrapped.

Unlike a few people on this thread, I like 'Star Wars'. Along with 'The Empire Strikes Back' those two movies in the series are quality productions (albeit non-British... yes no question of 'Star Wars' being able to be considered British in any way). The rest of the movies in the series were pretty poor... entertaining rubbish.

I don't mind being entertained by rubbish sometimes

There's nothing wrong with rubbish .... films often derided as rubbish are sometimes liable to bite their critics on the arse.

Me too! After French 'Arty' stuff a bit of 'belief suspension' is good! If you enjoy watching it, why not?

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

Only if the critics live long enough. 'Peeping Tom' anybody?

I think the 'Star Wars' movie which will fare the worst in viewer memory is not actually the worst of the bunch, but 'Attack of the Clones' simply because of where it lies in the story of the series - between the dire 'The Phantom Menace' and the movie many of the fans had waited a load of years to see... 'Revenge of the Sith' and Vader in the 'lava pit'. Clones seems to vanish between the other two movies of the prequel series... whereas 'The Empire Strikes Back' was such a highlight of the classic trilogy.

Nobody is going to suffer a painful behind in future by declaring 'The Phantom Menace' to be a pile of rubbish... although Darth Maul's lightsabre battle was the third best duel in the entire series (after the ones between Luke and Vader).

thats true, the original "New Yorker" review of the Wizard of Oz read;
"I sat cringing before Oz, which displays no trace of imagination, good taste or ingenuity" .... duhhhh!... and James Agate said of "Citizen Kane" ; "I thought the photography quite good but nothing to write to Moscow about, the acting middling and the whole thing a little dull" .... what!!!!! the surprising thing about those reviewers is that they remained in employment continuing to write reviews! its a mad old world for sure, we could start a thread about amusing,ill informed reviews.
