I was very pleased to see Ladybird, Ladybird listed, a scathing indictment of the welfare system, along with another favourite of mine, Cathy Come Home, both directed by Ken Loach. So too, Kes in which a glimmer of hope is so devastatingly quashed at the end. They all make me very angry but they must be seen.

Speaking of Ken Loach, an excellent drama of his available on DVD is Raining Stones with Bruce Jones (acting for a change and not irritating as he is in Coronation Street)and Ricky Tomlinson.
It also features one of the best screen baddies.

I tried watching Raining Stones, but I found it quite unintelligible at the beginning and gave up on it. Maybe it's the regional/cultural divide?

Speaking of Ken Loach, I see he's appearing at the Gulbenkian Theatre, University of Kent on Mon 4th Oct at 6:50pm. That will be followed by a screening of Ladybird Ladybird (1994).

Watched the DVD of Touching the Void last night. Excellent. It is a drama documentary about two climbers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates climbing a mountain in Peru. The actual climbers relate the story themselves,but actors (or climbers) act out their terrible ordeal of when Joe Simpson slips down with a broken leg and hangs on the end of the rope. Yates,himself getting dragged,makes the heart wrenching decision to cut the rope,letting his friend fall.
The film is of high quality drama and tension.
It was made by the Oscar winning documentary maker Kevin McDonald and financed by Film 4.

Kevin Macdonald also won the Alexander Korda award for the Best British Film (not just documentary) at the BAFTAs for Touching the Void.

He won his Oscar for One Day in September (2000). That should be on everyone's Must See list. He's done quite a few other very good documentaries like Humphrey Jennings (2000)
and Being Mick (2001) (about Mick Jagger).

He's the grandson of Emeric Pressburger (as in Powell & Pressburger) and has written a biography about Emeric.

A very nice man.

Talking of films financed by channel 4, one of their early gems was "P'Tang Yang Kipperbang"(1984) directed by the wonderful Michael Apted. An endearing tale of schoolboy love wonderfully acted by the mainly young cast,excellently written by Jack Rosenthal,with little subplots that only the schoolboy mind can conjure. I humbly recommend this little sparkler to anyone who hasn't seen it. :)
