What does watching movies most make you (unreasonably) want? A gun? A speedboat? Genevieve? Helen Mirren? In my case, no doubt- a BUTLER. Last night I watched (courtesy of a senior member) "Sweet Devil" a 1938 Bobby Howes romantic comedy. I now know that when I retire, if I'm spared, I want to hibernate in winter, draw the curtains and watch old Brit movies of that kind. I will sit in front of the screen with a large pot of tea, a pile of anchovy toast and hot buttered teacakes until, at the stroke of 6, the BUTLER (hem hem) will come in with a bottle of champagne and a pot (jam jar sized) of caviar. Yesssss!

One of those big house in the South of France with a lovely garden and a balcony at the top of a cliff. Unfortunately, according to the movies, your next door neighbours are exclusively big time crooks, one of your relatives is barmy and will want to kill you or drive you equally as nuts and Cary Grant will want to burgle it. Ho hum.

Sounds just like heaven to me, Suze! Except for the anchovy toast - make that strawberry jam!

We can have both, Rob! Don't forget we've now got a butler to bring in the tray and do the washing up afterwards...

    The camera obscura from AMOLAD.

Although I'd quite like Doc Reeves' motorbike as well

Steve, even though I've only been a member for a short time I have cottoned on to the fact that you would probably settle for ANYTHING from AMOLAD!!!

That sounds very nice! But as you say, possible neighbour problems! (Though I did like the lovely villa that Boris (my ideal movie-verse GBF or older brother) has in The Red Shoes, with the overgrown path.)

A castle would be fun (well-stocked library essential).

I'd also like a decent wine-cellar, a chef, and full staff.

Magic powers could be handy, too.

What? Have you never had Gentleman's Relish, spread very thin, on hot wholemeal toast? It's lovely!

Indeed! But you also must have the ingenious plan to go with it!

Villa Leopolda, Avenue Leopold II, Villefranche, Gers, France

I must go there sometime and see what state the old place is in

Jam on it too, no doubt! A tad greedy perhaps, but I suppose if you are going to dream, dream big!

A 'Pod' type chair that Adrienne Corri is sitting in in the movie 'Clockwork Orange', then she arises from the Pod to answer the Door........it looks very Spage-age, which a lot of things were at the time being the era of 'Man on the Moon'!

That's the fun of the movies: big dreams! The small ones we can sometimes realise ourselves!

Mr Colpepper's house in "A Canterbury Tale" a quinterssentially British old house in a time capsule sort of way. And as Alison (Shelia Sim) sais in the film"What wouldn't I give to live in a house like that!"
