On Saturday 2nd February 2008 at 10:30 am BBC Radio 4 has a series called "And The Academy Award Goes To...." presented by Paul Gambaccini, who traces the history of the Oscars and tells the story behind award-winning films. This week he explores Laurence of Arabia (but in later programmes he might cover some good films as well)!

In the trailer it mentioned the impact of that scene where Omar Sharif approached the camera from afar (and women as well as their ice creams melted in their cinema seats).

For those who can't get Radio 4 in real time in their country they have a Listen Again service on the BBC Web site, so it'll probably be available from Sunday or Monday.

That's a shame, a very well informed man in lots of areas. But it's not compulsory to like anyone

Sad that everyone seems to have an aversion to Paul G. I rather like his languid Yank accent and respect his encyclopaedic knowledge about all sorts of things. I listened to his programme and thought it was very well made. The one thing that raised an eyebrow of mine was the American film studies lecturer (my four un-favourite words in that order) who thought that Peter O'Toole resonated with the zeitgeist - the Camelot of the Kennedys - and even vaguely looked like JFK. Thus, he was mystified why O'Toole didn't win the Oscar. But surely, I thought, and perhaps y'all think the same, that Gregory Peck won the Oscar for Mockingbird precisely because he DID embody the Kennedy era with all that idealism, civil rights stuff going on. Lawrence on the other hand was a repressed queer with a liking for executing people and getting flogged and as far as I know JFK wasn't into any of that weird stuff. Apart from this, a smart programme which I'll certain stick with on the ensuing three Saturdays.

No aversion here. I like him, especially for his encyclopaedic knowledge about all sorts of things
