A very under-rated actor, in my opinion in the same league as Brando, Clift and Dean, but he came first!
Just watching this on Sky right now, and have found out on imdb how John Garfield plays the fiddle. Looking down the barrel of the fiddle, so to speak, we see a close-up of Garfield's face and his bowing and fingering too. But in fact there were two real fiddle players on either side of him, one working the bow, and the other the fingerboard. Isn't that fantastic!? Johnny![]()

I am with you there Joe, Garfield is fantastic in films such as Force of Evil, Gentleman's Aggreement, Postman Always Rings Twice and the under-rated He Ran all The Way.
A terrific actor!
He was also the original choice to play Kowalski in the stage version of 'Streetcar'.
I agree John Garfield is under-rated, but as natural as anyone in his day, he had a tough upbringing which comes through in his acting. Sadly victimised by the mad Mcarthy for his political beliefs.
