That film has a devoted following here in the US. Even very young women (and I assume the devotion is limited to women) tend to love it - and I mean "love".
Vivien Leigh is beautiful and a fine actress. But I thought the plot was ludicrous: it suggests that employment opportunities for women in London in 1940 were limited to ballet dancer and prostitute. If the first one doesn't work out - then the second choice is all there is.
Surely she could have become a waitress or a writer or a bus conductor or a teacher? The story asks the viewer to feel sorry for her, but I just thought it was over-the-top. I thought: That's too bad about the dancing career, but you'll get over it. Maybe that is not in the spirit of the film!![]()
