Patrick McGoohan was noted in more than one interview for writing a lot of poetry, whether rhyming or blank verse is his forte was never mentioned. As early as 1963/64 he was noted for making his own films. One interview had him on the set of Dr. Syn, filming the film being filmed.................

Maybe one day he'll put out a dvd...............

As I've learnt from this site, Peter Cushing was an accomplished amateur artist - and probably had many other interests as well

Eric Clapton is another photo geek! I bumped into him at a specialist Leica camera dealer in London a while back, we had a brief conversation possibly more on account of the attractive young lady I had with me ( a model friend) than an interest in chatting to me about lenses!! A few days later I saw a photo of him in the paper with an article making fun of him because he had his new Leica camera and the photo showed him attempting to take a picture with the lens cap still on, a bit unfair really because a Leica has a direct viewfinder rather than thru the lens viewing so the only thing to tell you that the lens cap is on is a flashing red light in the viewfinder, I have a leica and everyone else who has one is always putting the camera to their eye with the lens cap on, one immediatley takes it off of course and hopes that no one saw you trying to take a pic with the cap still on poor Eric got caught out at the wrong moment, the newspaper would never show his reaction a split second later when he realised the cap was still on.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Boris Karloff used to knit when he wasn't filming. (or did I just dream that)

I know where this thread is coming from but I always feel that the person on the screen (i,e., ones favorite character) should stay as one sees them rather than their off screen persona. For instance, Rock Hudson was a great draw on screen with a great persona that would be totally ruined if the real truth was told during his fame days.

I wouldn't think so Captain (intelligent enough that is judging by the banal output of cinema most of the time!) but I still say that 'image on screen' matters to the selling of tickets and who really cares about their private lives

that may or would conflict with their screen image?

But clearly lots of people care about their private lives - including, I assume, everyone on these boards or we'd never read any biographies. As you say, image is on screen is what matters so there's absolutely no reason why someone now should feel obliged to hide their interest in knitting or macrame. But I don't get why people assume that the on-screen persona should reflect the off-screen reality - bit scary to be a fan of Christopher Lee or Vincent Price if that were really the case!

BTW, another famous embroiderer, though not an actor, is former TUC boss Norman Willis.

Excellent point Captain and a good view. However what I was trying to say is this. We, the public do not control celebrities, they intend to 'control us'. This was the case with the old cinema with artistes mostly (strictly) under studio control - promoting the (perhaps untrue) image to us. Image sells tickets and it still does. Persons with poor image off screen are not too popular. Is it really any better with current stars earning huge fees much larger than the old timers pretending to 'save the planet and adopt an ethnic child from Africa' whilst driving six 4 by 4s?

Truth or Gossip is this the choice? Newspapers get much stick on this site so; what is truth and what is gossip. Do we really trust 'Hello' etc??

Truth is that they like knitting or embroidery or writing poetry.

Gossip is that they like gang-banging, sniffing coke or exposing themselves on their webcam.

    Easy to see the difference.......

Lawnmower racing owes its origins in part to actor Oliver Reed who, at an inaugural event lost control of his machine and demolished the VIP toilet tent, fortunately without injury to either driver or occupant - "luckily, dear boy, because we were both seated at the time"

Tony Curtis enjoys painting, as did Peter Cushing.

Christopher Lee has a love of opera.

I went to see the play 'Rock' in Liverpool this week with Bette Bourne (male) playing Henry Willson who was Rock Hudson's agent. When Rock was about to be 'outed' in the fifties, Willson gave 'Confidential' magazine a story about another of his clients Rory Calhoun being an ex-convict in order to suppress the truth. When Willson died of alcoholism, Rock Hudson did not attend the funeral, but strangely, Rory Calhoun acted as a pallbearer. I think this new play would make a good tv drama.
