Totally agree - and if you see his 2005 album AT THIS TIME you should buy it as it is the best thing he ever did.

From my soon-to-disappear web page I WAS A TEENAGE CHART FREAK - this is just the 60s stuff he did that made the charts in the UK...

    BURT BACHARACH

Born in Kansas City on 12th May 1928, Burt became one of America’s best known songwriters, writing (usually in partnership with Hal David) number one hits in the 50s (“Magic Moments” for Perry Como, “Story Of My Life” for Michael Holliday) and working tirelessly as a composer of film themes, arranger, and he even managed to do a musical “Promises Promises” before falling temporarily from favour in the 1970s.

His career picked up again in the 80s and in the 21st century he is acknowledged as one of the greatest pop composers of all time with many of his songs acknowledged as classics. He was married to fellow songsmith Carole Bayer-Sager from 1982 to 1991 and in the 1990s he appeared in the first “Austin Powers” movie as himself, worked with Elvis Costello and in November 2005 he issued a new album "At This Time", which included contributions from Elvis and Dr Dre and was an album of protest songs concerned about the presidency of George Bush Jr and America's involvement in Iraq.

He is still working and doing the odd gig.

That was to get the wonderful rhyme of "pneumonia" and "phone yer"

What do you get when you fall in love?

You get enough germs to catch pneumonia.

After you do, he'll never phone yer.

Herb Alpert's version of This Guy's in Love with You is pretty much perfect.

The Look of Love by Dusty Springfield is my favourite Bond song (when I'm being truculent).

I always preferred The Stranglers' version of Walk on By...

    BB's a genius.

A Supreme Team for sure. I think I once heard Burt in a radio interview concede that Aretha's version of "I Say A Little Prayer"was superior to his/Diionne's version. Hal's lyric to "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" is probably the finest on the subject of would be stars' dreams dashed. There's a great version of "Trains, Boats and Planes" by The Box Tops and a very interesting version of "Walk On By" by Kevin Coyne.

I totally agree with all three points DW .... TLOL wouldn't be out of place in a 'proper' Bond film (not sure about the truculent bit ).... and as for The Stranglers, I saw them do it live, awesome!

I once worked in San Jose, and was always whistling that song. BB & HD were great colloborators and have given us some great music. Was BB married to Angie Dickinson at some stage???

I've often wondered where Gene Pitney was when he was "24 hours from Tulsa." I really must get out more.
