Just wondered. I have three different versions of Oliver Twist, and also after another one now, but admittidly one of those was recently bought for me as a present which I hadnt asked for.

I know that there are many versions of different stories by Dickens with many of our favorite old time actors so that probably makes a difference, but just wondered if you are as mad as me with your favorite film, whatever it is

I suspect some of the answers may say that the re-makes of thier favorites are not a patch on the origional so the answer is `NO`!

I have all the versions of The 39 Steps, umpteen versions of Dracula and Frankenstein, several versions of Robin Hood and all the Mutiny on the Bounty films. I also have 2 films about the Borgias plus the complete tv series and many films and documentaries about Custer.

    Yes!

I have most adaptations of The Prisoner of Zenda, A Tale of 2 Cities, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Ivanhoe, Hardy adaptations, 2 Cold Comfort Farms, lots of Draculas, and various Arthurian movies. I wouldn't describe these (with the exception of the 1930s and 1950s versions of Zenda) as 'remakes', since most are different adaptations from literary sources. Many books can be approached from different angles; different screenwriters will approach them from their own individual sensibilities, and also under the influence of the times in which the adaptations are made. And even performances of classic plays, by Shakespeare or Ibsen or Wilde, or whoever, using identical scripts, can be very distinctive depending on the direction, casting, & c.

Why does remaking a classic film attract opprobrium among some people, when in theatre, it's possible to enjoy different productions of the same play over the years, and compare/contrast how different directors and casts tackle the same material?

There is quite a nice "Prisoner of Zenda" pastiche sequence in "The Great Race" with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Lemmon is hilarious....."you great Lesley you!"

Think I've three or four versions of Hound of the Baskervilles; Hammer, Moore and Cook, a tv film and Basil Rathbone. I'm rather fond of Hammer's Technicolor version.

"T he Great Race" by B.Edwards, is a really great and funny one, I just love it too !!....yes, the pastiche sequence with Lemmon playing a very gay king !!!!; also P.Falk in it, I just despair to find it on DVD, like many others........

S.O.B also by B.Edwards that I really want to see once .
