Bats.

As a former 2000ad devotee I had been waiting years for Dredd and the mag had been giving regualr updates, so to the see the final product - I could have cried.

For me Superman: The Movie beats off all-comers.

Like Christine I have always liked Dick Tracy too - I think it helps that it is made by someone who is fussy about what he is in rather than some geek boy: Bonnie and Clyde, The Parallax View, McCabe and Mrs Miller, Shampoo, Julie Christie.

I don't think Warren was that fussy about what he was in, I mean there was Julie Christie thats true, but also scores of other beautiful fortunate young ladies

haven't seen the warren beatty film based on the dick tracy comic strip, but i did recently buy four cheap dvd's of the rko dick tracy films of the late 30's/early 40's starring either morgan conway or ralph byrd - b grade pictures but fun to watch.

also included on the discs were 15 episodes of the serials made by republic and also starring ralph byrd.

Not strictly comic book, but I've just managed to watch 20 minutes of Thunderbirds - I think I did well, considering it was one of the biggest travesties I have ever seen. I thought it was going to be bad - but WOW! Does it suck!!!

Yeah, the film is just awful, I prefer to remember the TV series and the puppet characters, so much better!

Warren Beatty's not the reason I applaud DICK TRACY. It's the set designers, the costumers, the cinematographers and the director-producer who put all those elements in. They use such vivid colors and lightings, like a Sunday comics strip. Plus the makeup is outstanding, leaving so much of the face recognizable but morph'd into those comic-strip villains - Wrinkles, Flathead, etc.

The story, dialog, acting - that's fine, nothing special (although Al Pacino's dance instruction scene received his 'favorite scene in career' several years ago during an interview).

Unhappy

The first two Superman films with Christoper Reeve were good, but as I have never been a Batman fan (I think it stems from those stupid programmes with Adam West),I have never seen the Batman films, though I have heard the Christian Bale one was well made.
Making a live version of Thunderbirds was a big mistake, and it is just the same with Popeye,The Flintstones and Scooby Doo - somehow I just can't relate to the characters. I hope they never make a live version of The Simpsons.

I think "Batman" has been fairly mangled in the various films over the years with Clooney and Kilmer and Bale all not quite right IMHO. I think the first Batman film set the tone for what was to come, a very dissapointing film which to me should have been called "The Joker" as has been suggested by others. I really liked the TV series with Adam West because it succeeded in setting out what it intended to do which was to entertain both children and adults, very tongue in cheek and a bit silly yes but that was part of its charm for me, I have fond memories of watching it as a kid and taking it very seriously indeed, its only watching it as an adult that you realise that it is very tongue in cheek and quite funny and great fun

I expected so little of Christian Bale's BATMAN because it was - what? - the third or fourth re-telling of the "origin" tale? It's like the filmmakers just can't get past that waste of time.

Yet, the story was significantly better detailed and better told, and I rather liked the absence of the tired, worn-out cartoon villains that were dumped on other films.

The fact that tired, worn-out tales are going to continue to be hosted by Christian Bale sets my expectations for this next one even lower. The Joker? Again?!! I could have SWORN that Batman had more than 3 villains - even Adam West's versions had more creativity!

Oh well, set the expectation levels to the rock-bottom and hopefully this won't be a huge letdown.
