name='TimR']Agreed - an excellent, complex film.

It was a failure when it was released, but has a high reputation now, at least in the US, and is well-known. It is shown on television on a regular basis and it is known by people who were too young to see it when it was released.

Part of it's poor financial showing on it's first release was down to FS getting the film withdrawn following JFKs assassination. It was unseen for many years. It is a superb film ...... the remake is pretty good but pales next to the original. Both FS and Laurnece Harvey are superb.

That is one of the few cases where the withdrawal of a film was understandable.

I read recently that Lucille Ball was Frankenheimer's first choice for the role of Mrs. Iselin, played by Angela Lansbury. It would have been intriguing casting: she was a very tough, shrewd woman and might have been outstanding in the part. But as she was biggest name in television comedy, she refused as it would have harmed her image (at least in her own opinion).

name='Briant']'The Man with the Golden Arm' was a title I remember from the fifties. Kim Novak co-starred. Has anyone seen 'Johnny Concho?' A Western drama with one of my favourite villains Leo Gordon amongst the cast.

I thought it was a terrible film

Everything about this title is memorable apart from the film - the opening title sequence and poster artwork by Saul Bass, the searing jazz soundtrack by Shorty Rogers and not forgetting the fantastic source material - the novel by Nelson Algren which I highly recommend - which I would imagine gave the film a certain aura at the time.

Suddenly is a OK hard-boiled noir type of film, much copied actually and lends to Sinatras hard man persona in some ways but where I think he excels but didn't get the credit for was in Von Ryans Express where he leads a mainly British bunch including Trevor Howard out of a POW camp on a train with loads of Nazis after them to be brief - good rollicking fun with actually a few intricate and fascinating moments.

VRE is a terrific film with a very good performance from FS. I agree that FS doesn't get enough credit for his performance in this, his character is quite complex for the genre and FS succeeds in creating a rounded person, and of course who can forget the famous ending.

Yes, a very - how could one say... experimental ending for a very big star.
