name='Mr Sloane']I don't think Monty and Cole were ever lovers, they both had a taste for rough trade. Cole who was a racist who fell out with Monty when he took a black lover into his house ( as a servant of course).
I read that, too. When that book came out, columnist James Bacon would constantly write columns denying Porter was gay and was always interviewing people who knew him denying he was. Porter, according to that book, was also a closet anti-semite. He was stilll a helluva songwriter.

I agree probably the greatest, as has been said else where you can appreciate a talent without liking or agreeing with an artist.

Ahem. I don't think the World's Greatest Songwriter is any friend to racism . Nor would he be voting Tory, if he were British.

And, topic, he appeared as himself in the forerunner to Glee

I can't find the superior Millicent Martin version but a Sondheim song that would have appealed to Mr Porter in more ways than one.

Lots of interesting posts in this thread I started. Straying off topic now and then, but forums are like that. Lots of people, like Moonfleet above, giving interesting examples of people playing themselves, but my point was about actors playing serious character roles (as Edmund Gwenn in The Bigamist) when somewhere in the film their name crops up in the script or on a poster they are passing, etc. I think these instances are more interesting and I wonder if it's a bit of fun by the director of the film or the scriptwriters.

Virtually all of his pre-Carry On films. He was a superb character actor.

I agree with you ,he was superb.Just getting through the Bless This House boxset,he was great in this and if he had lived he would have been great in anything he performed in.

Johnny Weismuller played a character called "Johnny Weismuller" in at least 2 low budget Jungle Jim rip-offs. It was never clear whether he was playing himself or simply someone called Johnny Weismuller.

Weismuller had previously played Jungle Jim in a series of films for producer Sam Katzman. I think Katzman then lost the rights to the name "Jungle Jim" so he simply changed the name of the main character to Johnny Weismuller and carried on making the same movies !! Most of the audience probably didn't even notice.

Sorry, I know it's not a British film, but in a topic like this, you have to mention Airplane (1980), in which a boy recognizes the actor playing pilot Roger Murdock as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar—a hilarious bit of fourth-wall demolition.

The actress who played the character May Wynn in The Caine Mutiny change her real life name (Donna Lee Hickey) to that of the character, thinking it would bring her more fame and glory on the back of that film .... it didn't.

The actress who played the title role in the 1930s Anne of Green Gables changed her name to Anne Shirley from Dawn O'Day

There was also the pilot who thought he was Ethel Merman in the same film.

Ah, no - that isn't a proper example! That's Ethel Merman playing a character called Lt. Hurwitz - not "Ethel Merman"! Ok, so I'm a pedant...

Or it's a character named Lt. Hurwitz impersonating Ethel Merman being played by Ethel Merman.

    My head hurts.

    But point taken.
