It would have gone that way eventually, no doubt, but the unrealistic portrayal of working class life in 1983 was...extraordinary..I thought. And the way it played so heavily on every possible stereoptype without a shred of irony whilst the Hovis tune played over the top...
My mother and her sister went to see it seperately (and both have always taken immense pride in having the best working class credentials - 'we had no carpet when I was growing up etc) and..well..they were just so annoyed....I was just aghast.. It was just so insulting.
As if being a ballet dancer isn't the stupidest, most unfair, heavily constrained, likely to cripple you before 30 profession known to man.
