To Kill a Mockingbird
I saw it as a little girl and it had a HUGE impact on me.
I'm still looking for a man like Atticus Finch..........*sigh*
Hi. It's late. But I've thinking about doing this thread for a little while. I have a wonderful daughter who's into films, and is 6-and-a-half years old, and I wonder what films you people would now recommend...of course she's seen some films but not all. And of course I have thoughts of what's best and appropriate for her to see this winter, but I'd like to know what the forum feels is best in her near future to watch on DVD. Of course I know best cos I know her, but please don't let this get in the way! This isn't too serious, and no, I'm not short of ideas myself, but just out of interest....
A few pointers: her love of animals influences most things in her (& my) life, but she loves all kinds of intelligent stories....her tv last film was David Lean's Oliver Twist. Before that she stayed with Battle of Britain all the way to the end after missing the first half-hour... She first went to the cinema when she was two, and enjoyed Racing Stripes (now how many of you can say that!), before that it was TV showings of Disney's Beauty & the Beast, Jungle Book...other faves include Spirit: Stallion of the Cirmarron, Lassie (new version), Balto, Ring of Bright Water, Prince of Egypt, The Nightmare before Christmas. ... her last cinema film was Mamma Mia (singalong) [see my previous thread]. I'd like to follow up watching Oliver Twist with a few other older films (I first saw and appreciated A Night to Remember when I was slightly older than she is now) but I'd be very happy to hear recommendations of anything, new or old, film or TV....cheers

I think Born free might be enjoyable for her , I know my kids loved It at her age (still do )
Whistle down the wind Is in my top three all time favourites ,and my kids also loved it (again they still do )
Obviously there are a multitude of animated movies by Disney and Pixar some popular ones being a bugs life Toy Story 1and 2 and Monsters Inc
It sounds like she has a liking for musicals as well ,my kids loved The Newsboys / Newsies which has a teenage Christian Bale in it .
Hope you find some Interesting titles for her![]()

One of my all-time faves. I heard a story on National Public Radio several months ago about how "IAWL" had gotten shown on the big screen at several theaters in Britain last Christmas. I'm glad, because it's an absolute classic imo. Never been able to get through the entire film without a tear or two.

I have a great-nephew who is 5 years old and he also enjoys films, especially those featuring animals. He's recently been watching the Sherk films on DVD and all the Wallace and Gromit films, including The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit. He also likes a TV show about a giant blue bear - sorry, but I can't remember what it's called.![]()
And also anything to do with the Muppets.![]()
Many, many thanks for all the replies, all great ideas and thank you. I can't list all the films she has watched but Born Free was another early one, recorded from Channel 4, PRIOR, to its last outing by that station so she's been familiar with that one for at least two or three years.
to kill a mockingbird is a really interesting one....but she has a feeling of discrimination for animals but not humans yet! That'll come in a year or two....
Cars she liked, but not a lot (I hated it)...dunno about the newsies, and she has loved Disney/Pixar (Nemo was an early favourite and it's brilliantly realised) but she's more into Dreamworks animation before it sold out to commerce (all the hype about Prince of Egypt was justified, Spirit is criminally overlooked, and has anyone seen Road to El Dorado?). She enjoyed the Water Horse but I was disappointed, national velvet was seen and liked but the Black Stallion had bettered it (the latter seen via Amazon DVDs when she was 4), her mum will introduce her to 'wonderful life', perhaps this Christmas, and I want her to see the old version of M.Joe Young.
Muppet xmas carol has been enjoyed...were rabbit is a favourite (by chance she met Nick Park at his new game-signing he did at Hamley's in December 07), Norman W is a great idea, I LOVED his stuff as a kid, but if she's watching Will Hay I think it'll be on her own(!)
My personal favourite family films are Whistle Down the Wind and Babe ...she hasn't really concentrated on Whistle yet, and I would love it if the BFI showed it and we could see it on a big screen. Babe she adored.
....my wife is itching to let her view Calamity Jane and we want her to see more films with female lead parts - she enjoyed the new version of Heidi at the cinema and loved Nim's Island.
Thanks all again
Oh yes, Chitty Chitty, she enjoyed the child catcher a while ago, like we all have!
When I started getting into film at an early age I loved all Christmas films, C C bang bang, Oliver the musical and Scrooge etc. Its a magical time for discovering what you like to watch and what you don`t like to watch because it is a fun season. To be honest, watching films of Dickens stories got me into history later in my life too so they are educational in some ways.
Another tip, I really loved all The Beatle fims when I was young, they are fun and maybe she will grow up to appriciate good music too
xx

I would also welcome a big screen showing of WDTW and would love my own kids ( Sorry , Adults who used to be my children) to watch it at the cinema .
Strangely enough I haven't seen Babe ,must put that right .
Young pups will be captivated by the 2005 film version of "The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby" It has James Cosmo as the graveyard keeper, Greg Wise, Sean Pertwee, Gina McKee and Christopher Lee as the Lord provost of Edinburgh. Its a really good family film and its superbly shot mainly around the historic town of Stirling in Scotland doubling up as old Edinburgh. I bought this for my nephews and nieces in Scotland and I've never seen them so glued to the screen by anything else! I've watched it with them a few times and I must say I have enjoyed it too but there is nothing quite like watching a film with young kids when you know they are enthralled! Recommended.![]()
My six year old really enjoyed One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing the other week on BBC2.
To be honest I couldn't remember it and enjoyed seeing a few old faces in it myself.
Many thanks again to all....Lucy hasn't seen 'dinosaurs' but is familiar with 'Greyfriars' s she saw the early 1960s Disney version...which was very good [embarrassing, and no we haven't got more money than sense, we [Idid [/I] buy the new version at Morrisons on DVD prior to a holiday but, being a daft modern family we were in such a rush we forgot to go to the desk to fill the empty DVD case with the disc!...and never did return to get it! ...still have the case somewhere!!!!]
Beatles? Indeed, Faginsgirl! Love them - I've been waiting for a big screen appearance of Yellow Sub to introduce her, but she knows her dad love them and their music. When she was 4 she came in to the lounge to find me watching Richard Lester's Musketeers and said 'is this the Beatles'!
Every night, when I clean her teeth, at the end when she puts together her front and lower chops we do a little a version of "All Together Now"...
The Marx Bros, all kids seem to love Chico and Harpo and even if they dont "get" Groucho They usually approve of the mayhem in his wake.
Yes, good idea. I am actually a fan of the Three Stooges also. Best of all though, Laurel & Hardy in their hey-day.
