    Perhaps because you're misinformed?

The likes of Michael Winner and Ken Russell have said that Oliver Reed's behaviour on set was exemplary...

It seems to be once he finished work that he hit the ale.

i would never have known .the legend that revolves around oliver would suggest that he would have been a bit sozzled occasionally on set . but there you go ,thats why its good to have people who are knowledgeable on individual aspects of brit films here , ,and thanks for correcting me in a pleasant manner ,keeps the atmosphere cordial .some others would have used it as a chance to humiliate me with plenty of that

I believe Peter Cook was pretty bad for turning up for performances tanked up - particularly in the days with Dudley Moore. I recall Dudley Moore once saying how fed up he became, often having to go on, particularly in live stage performances, and compensate for Peter Cook's inebriation.

It can sometimes be amusing for an audience to see a performer obviously a bit boozed up - but it's rarely fun for those who have to share the stage with them!

Watching ALL COPPERS ARE...the other night, and Ian Hendry seemed so far gone he could barely speak his lines.

Mr Reed famously wasn't quite so professional in his approach to television shows though as anyone who saw his legendary After Dark appearance can testify.

Well. Miss Joan Crawford was partial to a tipple on set. Famously in Trog she utters the line: "For is it not said music sooz the savage breast?".

    Bless.

IN between takes didn't Errol Flynn used to like a tipple including oranges injected woth vodka ? Also towards the end of his life in a lot of his tv performances he was the worst for wear. Was fabulous in The Sun Also Rises where sadly it looked like he was playing himself.

There's a clip on You Tube of Tony Hancock being interviewed on "Late Night

Line Up" & while he's not totally hammered he's obviously been on the ale!

The obnoxious (to me) Keith Allen appeared on a late - night chat show (it may have been the above-mentioned 'After Dark') obviously drunk and went off on a drunken rant. Loathsome yob.

    Very true.

I had a bit part in a film that starred Ollie in the 80s (another cutting room floor job for me) and he was thoroughly professional and completely sober when at work. Afterwards he headed for the local hostelries and remarkably never appeared to have a hangover the next day.

I believe the only time he got into bother when at work was during Cutthroat Island when he mooned at Geena Davis. IIRC he was sacked because of it.

I once asked Ollie about such incidents and he said that virtually all his 'drunken' antics on TV were performances of what the public expected of him. The After Dark incident happened because he'd been given lots of drink by the production staff who wanted him drunk, so he duly obliged.

Robert Mitchum was stoned during his Parkinson appearance ... allegedly. Carmen Miranda had her headwear filled with booze and used to suck it out via a concealed tube.

Jack Wild was very open about the fact that he downed a full bottle of (think it was either Gin or vodka) one day on the set of `our mutual friend`before his scenes.

He was quite open about his problems so others would learn from them.

Straff, I agree with you that Kieth Allen is just obnoxious! There has rarely been a time when I have seen him on t.v and he hasn`t appeared drunk. He gave a great performance in `Martin Chuzzelwitt`, but IMHO he just apppears on t.v as a lot of people do these days, a celebrity who likes to shock rather than act! Sad really!

Oliver Reed had the personality and talented reputation to get away with a lot of what he did on tv, but Kieth Allen definately has not!

    xx
