Default The Great Escape.

Now you probably all know that the bike 'Hiltz' rides in the film, isn't a BMW but a Triumph made up to look like a wartime Beemer.

Well, I hear a rumour that Triumph will release a limited edition re-make of the bike next year - whoo-Ho!! GOTTA HAVE! GOTTA HAVE!!

....even hints at an air brushed pic of Steve McQueen on the tank!!!

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

What about an airbrushed dedication to the stunt rider that actually rode it for the jumps? Let's hear it for Bud Ekins

Steve
I thought Steve McQueen did his own stunts......

Ekins did a lot of the driving on Bullit as well apparently with a few choice scenes of McQueen at the wheel leaning out of the car window while doing some impressive wheel spins. McQueen was more than capable and willing to do the stunts Ekins performed but was sensibly prevented for insurance reasons. The studio actively encouraged the myth that McQueen made the jump in The Great Escape, he does all the other riding and its obvious that he is an accomplished motor cyclist......he's the king of cool, man, without a doubt

He was an accomplished rider, but not quite in Ekins' class, and as you say, uninsureable. McQueen represented the US (alongside Ekins IIRC) in the International Six Day Trial in Europe the mid 60's....my stepfather covered these for Motorcycle News. In his, and other's at the time, opinion, you couldn't criticise his enthusiasm or dedication, but he wasn't quite international standard. Still, fantastic publicity for the event.
Incidentally, McQueen is around when Ekins does the main leap...he plays one of his own pursuers.....!

EDIT: Having found a very useful website, it was Germany '64, the 39th ISDT. McQueen retired on day 3 after crashing his Triumph. Bud Ekins (and his brother) were also part of the four man team...ironically, given the Great Escape situation, Bud had to retire when he broke his leg....

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

The Triumph model has already been released, as I've seen the adverts in Motorcycle Sport and Leisure magazine around February this year. It's not an official Triumph model, being done by a dealer, Jack Lilley, and based on the Scrambler.

Why would people wish to ride such a lump in this day and age? At least with old cars you have classic styling but I'd much prefer a modern streamlined bike with full fairing. Few things will ever surpass my first spin on a powervalve in the thrill stakes!

Some people prefer retro stylings...hence the success of the BMW 'mini' and any Harley Davidson made in the last fifty years...
For me, nothing surpasses my spin on my long-gone 1930 Sunbeam TwinPort model 9 around Brands....and I doubt I went above 70....and you can keep your fairings!!
